My mother through her fine example instilled (慢慢灌輸) within me the desire to help others. She taught me to notice those whom others ignore.

The railroad tracks (軌道) were within a mile of our house. Beggars frequently would knock at the doors in our neighbourhood in summer asking for food. They were often turned away. Others simply ignored the knocks.

My mum always went to the door smiling. She would invite them to stay and have some thing to eat. She would have me open up the card table and carry a chair out onto the covered side porch (走廊). There was a nice view into the flower gardens, and it was cool even on the hottest days.

She would bring a red and white tablecloth and set the table as carefully as she did for any company. She would pour their coffee and pile their plates with food and dessert. Usually she sent a packed lunch with them when they were ready to go, too. Sometimes she would take the newspapers to those who asked about work.

She listened to those who wanted to talk. She never asked what would lead them to be in this difficult situation. It did not matter. She saw only the need. Some thought she should not extend this courtesy (禮貌). She would say, "In the depression (蕭條時(shí)期) when my father was searching around for any work to feed us, thoughtful people fed him. I am just repaying their kindness. I cannot offer them money, but I can see they do not leave hungry and discouraged." My mum was quite a lady.

A. they seemed to be very rich                   B. his mother was known to be generous

C. they lived near a railway station             D. there was a railway near their house

57. How did the writer's mother treat beggars?

A. She was on guard against them.               B. She looked down upon them.

C. She respected them equally.                   D. She took pride in them.

58. The writer's mother sometimes took out newspapers _______.

A. for the beggars to kill time                 B. to teach the beggars how to read

C. to help those who asked about work            D. to help them do find their families

59. Which of the following can make an explanation for the mother's attitude to beggars?

A. Her father was once helped by others.             B. Her father liked to help beggars.

C. She was once a beggar herself.                D. Her mother taught her to help beggars.

B

Researchers helieve that the insect is better at managing congestion (擁擠) than humans. Ants are the most numberous type of animal on Earth with brains that contain about 250,000 cells -- the largest among insects.

Now collective intelligence expert Dr. Dirk Helbing says understanding more about ants could help solve one of the headaches of modern life -- road congestion.

His team set up an "ant motorway" with two routes of different widths from the nest to some sugar syrup (糖漿). Soon the narrower route soon became congested. But when an ant returning along the congested route to the nest collided with another ant just starting out, the returning ant pushed the newcomer onto the other path. However, if the returning ant had enjoyed a trouble-free journey it did not redirect the newcomer.

The result was that just before the shortest route became clogged the ants were diverted (轉(zhuǎn)移) to another route and traffic jams never formed.

The researchers also created a computer model of more complex ant networks with routes of different lengths. The team found that even though ants being rerouted sometimes took a longer route, they still got to the food quickly and efficiently.

Dr. Helbing, of the Dresden University of Technology in Germany, said that while you cannot allow cars to collide with vehicles coming in the opposite direction as a form of traffic control, you could do the next best thing and allow them to communicate.

His plan is to force cars traveling in one direction to tell oncoming vehicles what traffic conditions they are about to encounter -- so they can take evasive (回避的) action if necessary.

60. The first paragraph implies that _______.

A. ants are clever and good at dealing with the traffic jams because of developed brain function

B. ants have a special way to manage congestion

C. insects are similar to animals in dealing with the traffic jams because of developed brain function

D. insects have more advantages than humans

61. The underlined word "clogged" can be replaced by _______ in the following four words.

A. cleaned               B. crowded            C. narrowed            D. shortened

62. If an ant which returns along crowded route to the nest, how does the ant solve the traffic problem?

A. The ant will change the direction of its own.

B. The ant stopped the newcomer from moving ahead and forced the newcomer to wait here patiently.

C. The ant can't redirect the newcomer.

D. The ant will push the newcomer to the other route, so traffic jams aren't formed.

63. What's the advice that Dr. Helbing gives us?

A. The cars cannot be allowed to communicate with vehicles coming in the opposite direction.

B. The cars can communicate with vehicles in the same direction.

  C. The cars travel in one direction and tell oncoming vehicles about the traffic conditions.

  D. We should build more routes of different lengths and widths.

This is the VOA Special English Education Report. A few weeks ago, we talked about the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL. A listener in Cambodia named Thida asks if American colleges and universities also accept the IELTS exam. IELTS is the International English Language Testing System. It was developed by the University of Cambridge ESOL examiners.

Cambridge ESOL says the test measures true-to-life ability to communicate in English for education, immigration or employment. The IELTS tests listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, It uses a mixture of accents and spellings, including British English and American English,

The test is used by government agencies, schools and professional organisations in one hundred and twenty countries. And, yes, that includes the United States. The many American schools that accepted the IELTS can be found on the Web at felts.org.

Some schools accept both the TOEFL and the IELTS, but the graduate school at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, for example, says it prefers the IEITS.

The listening and speaking parts are the same for everyone who takes the IELTS, but people have a choice of reading and writing tests -- either academic or general training.

The listening test takes thirty minutes. There are forty questions based on a recording. The reading test takes sixty minutes. Students answer forty questions based on three written passages.

The writing test also takes sixty minutes. Students have to write two essays. One essay has to be at least one hundred and fifty words long and the other at least two hundred and fifty words. The shorter one is description of something; the longer one has to support and argument,

The speaking test takes less than fifteen minutes. "/'he score is based on a recorded talk between the student and a test examiner.

And that's the VOA Special English Education Report, written by Nancy Steinbach. If you have a general question for our series, write to special@voanews.com. I'm Barbara Klein.

Star hurdler Liu Xiang returned home last night after spending about three months in the United States for foot operation and recovery.

Liu and coach Sun Haiping were followed away by officials after arriving at Shanghai Pudong airport at around 6 : 30 p. m. , and said nothing to the waiting media.

Liu went straight to the Xinzhuang training base in Shanghai, where he will start on the comeback (恢復(fù)) through rehabilitation (復(fù)職) and training.

Feng Shuyong, vice-director of China's Athletics Administrative Center, said a group of experts is on standby at the training base to help with Liu's recovery.

"The experts will give Liu a full check-up tomorrow or the day after and advise regularly on rehabilitation in the coming months," Feng was quoted by qq. com as saying.

The foot injury forced defending champion Liu to quit from the 2008 Beijing Olympics last August after "he limped out of the Bird's Nest in the first round of the men's 110m hurdles, bitterly disappointing adoring home fans.

The 25-year-old Athens Olympic and world champion had successful foot surgery in December at the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston, and had four calcium deposits (鈣物質(zhì)) removed from his right Achilles tendon (跟腱).

He spent the next three months in Houston for rehabilitation and basic training under the guidance of doctors there.

"His recovery is better than we expected. Doctors believe that after three months' rehabilitation and training, he has actually achieved the level of recovery that generally needs four months," Feng said.

Liu will, however, be absent from the ongoing annual Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) meeting due to the recovery process. Feng said Liu is paying close attention to the meeting through the Internet, and closely following issues such as athletes' education and life after retirement.

The earth's ocean can reach depths of up to 11,000 metres. That is deep enough to cover Mount Qomolangma! Marine (海洋的) scientists divide the oceans into five zones. Each zone is different mainly as a result of how much sunlight reaches it.

Most of the life in the ocean can be found in the first zone, which begins at the surface and goes down to about 200 metres. Because there is sunlight at this level, plants are able to grow. Marine animals such as dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and sea lions, and of course a variety of fish, live in the sunlight part of the ocean. It is difficult to hide from other animals in the area, but many species have adapted by becoming dark on the top and light on the bottom. This makes it hard to see them against the dark water below and the blue sky above.

The second starts at 200 metres and goes down to about 1,000 metres. Some sunlight can reach this level, but it is not enough for plants to grow. Because this zone is relatively dark, many of the creatures that live here are able to make light with their body. The light from these animals makes the water look like a sky with moving stars in it.

The third zone is dark. This place, about 3,000 metres deep, may not seem a likely habitat (棲息地), but there are more creatures here than one might think. Most of the animals that live here are black or red because of the lack of light. At this depth, a slow shower of what looks like snow is falling. This phenomenon, called "marine snow", is actually nutrients falling towards the bottom of the ocean. It is source of food for the creatures that live in the deep.

Below 4,000 metres, the temperature is near freezing and there is no light at all. In fact, the zone is so dark and empty that scientists named this zone after the Greek word for "no bottom". There is not much life to be found in this cold and unpleasant part. But some creatures manage to survive here despite the high water pressure.

The very deepest part of the ocean is 2,000 metres further down. At this depth, the water pressure is extremely high and life is very difficult for the few creatures that live here. Compared to the other zones, this one has very little life. Since there is no light here, some animals don't have eyes. When scientists explored the very deepest parts of the ocean, they did not expect to find any life at all. It turned out that there are creatures as far down as 10,000 metres. They usually survive by living close to deep sea vents, "chimneys" that sent out gases from within the earth.
