During a research experiment a marine(海洋) biologist placed a shark into a large holding tank and then released several small fish into the tank. 1._______

The marine biologist then inserted a strong piece of clear fiberglass(玻璃纖維)into the tank, creating two separate parts. She then put the shark on one side of the fiberglass and a new set of small fish on the other.

Again, the shark quickly attacked. This time, however, the shark hit the fiberglass divider and bounced off. 2._______ Meanwhile, the small fish swam around unharmed in the second part. Eventually, about an hour into the experiment, the shark gave up.
This experiment was repeated several dozen times over the next few weeks. 3._____ Eventually the shark got tired of hitting the fiberglass divider and simply stopped attacking altogether.

The marine biologist then removed the fiberglass divider, but the shark didn’t attack. 4._____ So, they swam wherever they wished, free from harm.

Like the shark in the story, many of us, after experiencing setbacks and failures, emotionally give up and stop trying. 5.____ In other words, we continue to see a barrier in our heads, even when no ‘real’ barrier exists between where we are and where we want to go.

A. At the same time, the shark tried again and again.

B. We believe that because we were unsuccessful in the past, we will always be unsuccessful.

C. The shark was trained to believe a barrier existed between it and the small fish.

D. It kept repeating this behavior every few minutes fruitlessly.

E. We should keep on trying even if we meet obstacles.

F. Each time, the shark got less aggressive and made fewer attempts to attack the small fish.

G. As you would expect, the shark quickly swam around the tank, attacked and ate the smaller fish.

Rodney Smith, Jr. started mowing the lawns (割草坪) in Huntsville, Alabama last fall. He used his time between classes at Alabama A&M to reach a goal of mowing 100 yards before winter. Smith has been cutting grass for free to help single moms, the elderly, and the disabled, while teaching the local youth the values that can turn boys into men. “I’m doing something positive. I want boys to follow me and be better than me,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Rodney is from Bermuda. He says people there help each other and are always friendly. “That’s what drives me to help people.”

In May this year, he was getting ready to launch his mowing service for the summer when he heard about a 93-year-old woman trying to cut grass by herself. Smith and a friend showed up to do the job for her.

In November, a local TV station gave him $300, calling it a special gift for his good work. After he received the money, he used it to create the non-profit(非盈利的) service group, Raising Men Lawn Care Service. He also started a page to collect money to buy lawn equipment and other things—including T-shirts with special logos.

After I read about Rodney’s story, I told my friends about him. We also planned to mow lawns for single moms, the elderly and disabled in our neighborhood. And I hope more and more young people will join Rodney’s service group—Raising Men Lawn Care Service.

There is a very instructive incident involving the life of Alexander the Great, King of Greek. Alexander, after conquering many kingdoms, was returning home. On the way, he fell ill and it took him to his death bed. With death staring him in his face, Alexander realized his conquests, his great army, his sharp sword and all his wealth were of no consequence. So, he lay helplessly waiting to breathe his last. He called his generals and said, “I will depart from this world soon, and I have three wishes. Please carry them out without fail.”

“My first desire is that,” said Alexander, “My physicians alone must carry my coffin.” After a pause, he continued, “Secondly, I desire that when my coffin is being carried to the grave, the path leading to the graveyard be spread with gold, silver and precious stones which I have collected.” The king continued, “My third and last wish is that both my hands should be kept hanging out of my coffin.” Alexander’s favourite general kissed his hand and pressed it to his heart. “Oh, King, we assure you that your wishes will all be fulfilled. But tell us why do you make such strange wishes?”

Alexander took a deep breath and said, “I would like the world to know of the three lessons I have just learnt. I want my physicians to carry my coffin because people should realize that no doctor can really cure any bodies. They are powerless and cannot save a person from the clutches of death. So let people not take life for granted.”

“The second wish of spreading gold, silver and other riches on the way to the graveyard is to tell people that not even a bit of gold will come with me. I spent all my life earning riches but cannot take anything with me. Let people realize that it is just a waste of time to chase wealth.”

“And about my third wish of having my hands hanging out of the coffin, I wish people to know that I came empty-handed into this world and empty-handed out of this world.” With these words, the King closed his eyes. Soon he let death conquer him and breathed his last.

2.The underlined word “clutches” in Paragraph 3 means “________”.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2016-2017學(xué)年內(nèi)蒙古包頭市高二上期中考試英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

To the Editor,

I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times. In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays. The entire family enjoys reading the recipes(食譜) in the newspaper, as well as the Styles section.

The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story. I've never read an article that doesn't contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week's issue, you misspelled the word “secretary” used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used “it's” as a possessive(所有格). And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to elementary school, “it's” means “it is”. It's not a possessive adjective!

It's a pity that this tiny little hick (鄉(xiāng)下) town has only one newspaper, because I' d like to have an alternative to the rag (爛報(bào)) you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can' t spell correctly, how can you get your facts right?

I've been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel my subscription(訂閱). And buy yourself a dictionary.

Sincerely,

Jane Z. Jones

1.Which phrase from the passage shows the writer' s prejudice(偏見(jiàn))?

A. get this off my chest

B. tiny little hick town

C. reading the recipes in the magazine

D. three or four spelling or grammatical errors

2.The author's tone in this passage can best be described as ________.

A. happyB. humorousC. objective (客觀的)D. angry

3.Which statement from the passage is a fact?

A. We still have the Times delivered on Sundays.

B. It's a pity this town has only one newspaper.

C. The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story.

D. You never went to elementary school.

4.Which statement of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The writer once lived in New York City, so he was used to reading newspapers like The New York Times.

B. The entire family enjoys reading the Styles section in the local newspaper.

C. The writer has long been planning to express his dissatisfaction with the local newspaper.

D. It is obvious that the editors of the newspaper are not very careful about their work.
