In 1901, the citizens of Colorado Springs in the USA decided to collect everyday items and to seal (封。﹖hem in a special box. The box was marked “To be opened after midnight, December 31st, AD 2000”,and was kept in the Colorado College Library.
One hundred years later, on the appointed (約定)day, 300 people gathered to watch the opening of the box. Many in the crowd were the descendants (后代)of people who had placed things inside the box.
When the box was opened after midnight, the things inside the box were in very good condition. There were newspapers, photos, diaries, name cards, family trees, books and lots of letters, including one written by Theodore Roosevelt, who became the President of the USA later that year. One of Roosevelt’s friends lived in Colorado Springs at that time.
Many of the letters were written to their descendants. They describe the hopes that the people of 1901 had for the people of the next century. At that time, Colorado Springs had just a few thousand people. Now nearly half a million people live there.

Father’s Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother’s Day, and just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother’s Day, we should also have a Father’s Day. Father’s Day has become important in North America. And businesses found it was a good way to get people to buy a present for their father from their shops.
By the way, very few countries have a Father’s Day, though some have a Children’s Day, or a special day for boys and another for girls. More and more countries are having Mother’s Day, so maybe Father’s Day will also become popular before too long. Now, what do people in North America do on Father’s Day? The newspapers, radios, and TV tell children what they should do — buy, buy, buy, buy, buy a Father’s Day present for your father. They even tell a wife to buy, buy, buy, and buy a Father’s Day present — not for her father but for her husband, even if he is not yet a father. The word “sport” first meant somethin that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting (捕獵) wild animals and birds.
About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their spare time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Such people play because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best one can earn a lot of money.
For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than $3000 a year. The starts earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions (網(wǎng)球錦標(biāo)賽) can make more than $50000 in a year. Of course, only a few sporsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals (個人的) like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is that: the star can earn more money from advertising than from sport. An advertising for sports equipment (設(shè)備) does not simply say “Buy our thing”. It says “Buy the same shirt and shoes as…”. Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and food. They allow the companies to use their name or a photo of them and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people’s spare time.
