Last week we asked our reader a question,“What is the most unforgettable thing you have ever had?” Here are three readers' answers.

Once I was on a weekend hike with my class. The teacher told us to be careful.I fell just as she finished talking and what was worse,my glasses were missing.I can’t see without my glasses! I thought it could be the end of my trip. But everyone said I shouldn’t be so sad and they would help me.Some classmates helped me when I walked and others told me about the wonderful birds and trees they were seeing.Sometimes when you lose something, you might find friends in its place.Later, someone noticed something in my shirt pocket and asked what it was.I touched my pocket.“It must be my glasses!” Everyone laughed.

Dave Brown

Many years ago,I found a photo of my grandmother when she was young. She was very beautiful.“This must belong to my mother,” I thought. We were having a class about family trees and I thought grandmother's photo would be good for the lesson. So I took it to school and showed my friends.Unluckily,I couldn't find it after that class.Later, when I got home from school,I told my mother about the photo. She was very sad and cried for it was the only picture she had of her mother.I felt sad.I still do.

Liu Meifeng

Everyone always said my grandfather must have been very rich. They were always trying to guess where he kept his money because he always said his money would be lost if he put it in the banks. But no one ever found it.After he died, his relatives(親戚)got the many different things that belonged to him. When they asked me what I wanted,I asked if I could have his books. My other relatives laughed at me--Why would anyone want old books? Later,I found grandfather’s money--inside his books!

On the first Monday of the Firearm Officer Safety Training we were given guns and by Wednesday we were given our first test. We would score one mark for a hit to the    36    on the target, and half a mark for anywhere else on the body. When it was my turn, I entered the house    37   . When one of the officers followed me out, I couldn’t wait to ask, “Did I pass, sir?” “No,” he said angrily. “What? Why?” I wondered. I said sorry to the officer and told him that I was not terrible at other police trainings and I always scored a high mark when we    44    telling someone that their family member had died. “That’s good,” he said. “Because when you accidentally    45    someone with the way you did, you will be able to tell the family very nicely how they died.” In the end, after nine months of what is usually a six-month course, I realized that people around me would be a lot better off if I    46    to teaching.

I grew up in the 1950s with very practical parents. My mother washed aluminum foil(鋁箔紙)after she cooked in it, and then she reused it. She was the earliest recycle(回收)queen before people had a name for it.
My father was no different. He preferred getting old shoes fixed to -buying new ones. Their  marriage was good and their dreams were focused(集中).Their best friends lived just a wave away. Though my parents have passed away, I can see them now - Dad in trousers, a T-shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawnmower(割草機(jī))in one hand and dishtowel in the other.
It was the time to fix things -a curtain rod(掛簾桿),the kitchen radio, the screen door, the oven door, and so on. They fixed all things we had. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing and renewing made me want to scream.1 wanted just once to be wasteful. Waste meant being rich. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more. I often thought like that.
But then my mother died, and on that clear summer night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I learned that sometimes there isn't any more. Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away and it will never return. So, while we have it, it is the best that we love it, care for it, fix it when it's broken and cure it when it's sick.
This is true for marriage, old cars, children with bad report cards, dogs with bad hips and aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it and because we are worth it.
