Whenever we meet with difficulty or failure (失敗), teachers, parents or others often say to us "Never
give up." These can be encouraging words. A person should believe in himself and keep trying to be
successful no matter how many times he fails. Therefore, I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily, we will seldom achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to
fail in something new, so we should try again. Besides, if we always give up when we fail , we will not be
able to develop new skills and grow.
Another reason is that we can learn from our mistakes so as not to do the same things again. If we do
not try once more, the lesson we have learned is wasted.
Finally, we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals, we develop confidence, and
this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge(挑戰(zhàn)) ourselves,
we will begin to doubt our abilities.
In short, it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals. We succeed in the end or
not, we will learn something , and what we learn will help us to become better and more confident.
What's more, if we give up , we have no chance of realizing our dreams any more , but if we keep making
great efforts, there is always a chance that we will be successful one day.

No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon(外科醫(yī)生) and part of it is taken
out. Today, however, we needn't worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into
a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new.
It is not many years since a man who had to have an operation felt all its pain.
Long ago, operations had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. The sick man
had to be held down on a table by force while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain
if his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room and the hearts of those who watched.
Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called "laughing gas". Laughing gas
became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time
laughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn't seem to feel pain when they
were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him.
Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well's teeth. Wells felt no pain at all. As
he didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out
with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.
Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this
terrible event.

“Mr. Mott often forgets important meetings. The robot will go after him all the time. It listens to everything he says. It sees everything he does. At night, it watches him sleep. It knows everything about Mr. Mott…”

It sounds like a wonderful idea, doesn’t it? But I’m afraid that Mr. Mott will not get on well with the robot, because everyone has something he doesn’t want others know. It is privacy. Just imagine that there is a video camera around you all day. How do you feel? When you are taking an exam, a teacher sits in front of you and watches you all the time. How do you feel?

Dear World,

My son starts school today. It’s going to be strange and new to him for some time. And I wish you would treat him gently.

You see, up to now, he has been king of his own room. He has been boss of the backyard. I have always been around to treat his wounds (傷), and to comfort his feelings.

But now things are going to be different. This morning, he’s going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure (探險).

So, World, I wish you would take him by the little hand and teach him the things he will have to know. Teach him there are heroes, leaders and friends in this world. Give him quiet time to think over the mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on the green hill.

Teach him to believe in his own ideas, even if everyone else tells him they are wrong.

Teach him to stand and fight if he thinks he is right.

Teach him never to put a price on his heart and soul.
