Martin Lynch, an American businessman, had been going on vacation to a small Mexican fishing village for a number of years. One morning while going for a walk along the beach, he saw his friend Pablo Perez, a local fisherman. Martin watched Pablo unload his boat and pack the fish in a box.
Martin noticed Pablo was smiling and looked very happy. He could also see several large fish in the boat. Martin greeted Pablo and asked how long it took to catch the fish. “Just a few hours,” replied Pablo. Martin asked, “why didn’t you stay longer and catch more fish?” “I have enough for my family,” Pablo said, “ And what do you do with the rest of your day?” asked Martin. “I take a nap, play with my children, spend time with my wife, and go into the village to see my friends and play cards. I have a full and busy life.” Martin explained that if Pablo worked longer hours and caught more fish, he could make more money. With the extra money, Pablo could buy more boats and catch many more fish. By selling the fish, Pablo could open his own factory and sell direct to supermarkets.
“Then what?” asked Pablo. “Well you would probably have to move to Mexico City to run the business. Finally, you would be about to sell your business and make millions of dollars,” replied Martin, “ How long will that take?” asked Pablo.
Martin thought for a while and said it would probably take at least 15 years.
“and then what?” asked Pablo.
“well, that’s the best part,” Martin said. “you will be able to retire, buy a house near the ocean, sleep longer, play with your children, spend more time with your wife, see your friends, and play cards.”

I have known Ting for a long time. She was a friend of mine in high school. Ting used to see me as her best friend in my class because, as she said , it was easy to be friends with me . Therefore ,when we had time in school, she often came to me and we would talk about many things. Though I didn’t have special feelings about this friend, I was fine with this because I didn’t see the reason why I should say “no” to a friend I didn’t hate.
But there was a while when she came to me, and usually said nothing meaningful. I started to feel tired and then tried not to meet her. After that she never came to me. Though guilty, I started to feel free about my life and never thought of anything about her feeling.
After a month or two, I heard from other friends that Ting’s father had passed away six months before. I was so shocked! Then I suddenly realized why Ting had often come to me but said nothing special. She needed my company (陪伴). I felt so bad about myself that I went to find her the next day. What is Britain’s favorite sports?
A reader from Manchester writes:
Dear Julie,
My question is- what is Britain’s favorite sport? My dad says it’s football but I think he’s wrong.I think it’s tennis.Who’s right?
It’s not an easy question to answer,Do you mean favorite sport for people to play(participant sport)or for people to watch(spectator sport)? The difference is important.Every year, four million people in Britain go fishing but every week, fifteen million watch football on TV.
I telephoned the Spots Council(委員會(huì))in London and asked them the question:
“It’s difficult to say which spectator sport is Britain’s favorite. There’s football,of course, but the Tennis Championships at Wimbledon(溫布爾登網(wǎng)球公開賽)are very popular too,and don’t forget the Olympics, cricket and horse-racing.”
So I can’t really answer the question about spectator sports. But the question about favorite participant sport is easy. The answer is surprising. It isn’t football or tennis or any games with a ball.To give you a clue,it begins with“w”,it’s cheap, there’s no special equipment and everybody in Britain does it.The answer is walking. And the second favorite? Swimming.
1.What is the story talking about?
2.How many people in Britain watch football on TV every week?
3.What’s Britain’s favorite participant sport?
