The village was a long way from town. It was twelve of thirteen hundred kilometers.
“You must go to the city,” I said to Atalipa. “Only a doctor can help you, and I am not a doctor. I'll go with you.”
“Go along the river,” he said, “Then climb over the great mountains.”
“Yes. That's the only way.”
“That's quite a long way and my people have never been to places so far!”
Atalipa did not enjoy the city very much. But we stayed for two months, and he got better. Then we went back to the great mountains, and went down the river in Atalipa's boat.
I asked him, “What are you going to tell your people? Will you talk about the city men? What will you talk about the big buildings and the cars?”
He thought for a minute. Then he said , “No , I won't tell them. They won't understand , and maybe they'll cry.”
“What do you mean? Why will they cry?” I asked.
“Because the city is your home. You're only staying with us. And so they'll cry for you.”

It was a cold wet night. The taxi driver hadn't had one passenger(乘客)all day. When he went by the railway station, he saw a young man from the country coming out, carrying two big bags. “Aha! ”thought the taxi driver, “here's the right person to make good this bad day. ”He quickly stopped the taxi and opened the door.
Driver: Where do you want to go, sir?

Young Man: What? Fifteen dollars? Do you think I'm a fool? You're trying to cheat(騙)me.
Driver: How dare you say I…
Young Man: You must think I don't know my way around.
Driver: But…
Young Man: Only last week I took a taxi from the station to this hotel. I know how much I should pay.
Driver: Oh…oh…all right. Now…now look…uh…
Young Man: I think I should call the policemen.
Driver: Oh, no! Please don't do that! I have a sick wife and four hungry children.
Young Man: All right! This time I'll forget it.

When I arrived.it was early morning and it was raining.I got out of the car, went through a gate and walked along a path.In the east,the sky was becoming light,but beside the path,it was still very dark.I knew it was there,but there was nothing to see

I looked down to the Colorado River about 2 kilometers below me.If you put the three tallest buildings in the world at the bottom of the canyon,they still won't reach the top.Then I looked across to the other side of the canyon.How far is it? It's 20 kilometers, maybe more.Finally,I looked to my left and to my right,and on both sides the canyon disappeared into the distance …over 400 kilometers long.The Grand Canyon is not just big It's huge.

Linda and David have traveled by air from London to Sydney, Australia. Linda has promised(答應(yīng))her mother that she will ring her to let her know that they have arrived safely. "Yes ,Mum ."Linda puts in.. "I just wanted to ring to ……."
"I remember how you rang when you went to Betty‘s house to eat , when you were a little girl.And then when you …" Mrs Lee is a great talker
"Nearly four pounds." says David.
Linda tries to tell her mother that it is time to say goodbye.
"Yes, all right, "says Mrs Lee ," But you will write, won′t you, as you did when you were at work …"
