Queen Elizabeth II is not only the queen of the United Kingdom, but she is also the queen of other 16 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Jamaica. Her face is seen on stamps and coins all around the world.

       Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born in London on April 21st 1926. Her parents were George, the Duke of York, and Elizabeth, the daughter of the Earl and Countness of Strathmore. As a child, Princess Elizabeth lived with her parents and younger sister in London and Windsor. Every summer, she traveled to Scotland to visit her mother’s parents. She was interested in all sorts of sports, but her favorites were horse riding and swimming. She was also keen on acting, art and music.

       As princess Elizabeth grew older, she started to play a part in British public life. When she was 14, she broadcast(播送) a radio message to all the children of Britain and the Common  -wealth(共和國). Two years later, she carried out her first public engagement, and started to go on official tours shortly after that. After a tour to South Africa in 1946, she married Philip Mountbatten. The couple had four children: Prince Charles, born in 1948, Princess Anne, born in 1950, Prince Andrew, born in 1960 and Prince Edward, born in 1964.

       After her father died, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II in a ceremony held in London in 1953. As a queen, she has many duties, and leads a very busy life. She travels throughout the world, meeting the leaders of other countries, and attends a large number of official duties. She also holds a meeting every week with the British Prime Minister. Every year, on Christmas Day, she broadcast a message to the people of Britain and the Common-wealth, talking about her hopes for the future.

Our nearest neighbor is the moon. In the sky,  the moon and the sun seem to be of the same size because the moon is much nearer.
The moon makes the tides—the changes in the level of the sea. The moon and the sun together pull the sea. In some parts of the world,  the difference between * high tide’ (when the sea is very near to the land) and ’ low tide’ (when the sea is far away from the land) is very big. This is very important for ships.
The moon is very different from the Earth. Gravity on the moon is six times weaker than that on the Earth. There isn’t any air. During the day,  it is very,  very hot but at night it is very,  very cold. Nothing can live on the moon.
If the moon goes between the Earth and the sun,  we have an eclipse of the sun(日食) . The moon stops the light from the sun and we have night in the day.

Stephen Hawking was one of the most famous scientists in this century. He was born in 1942. he’s a world well-known on space and time. Stephen is researching some very big questions, such as: How did the universe begin? How will it end?
Stephen was a student at Oxford University. He studied math and science. Then, at the age of twenty, he became sick. He was so young, but the doctors said to his family, “He has only two more years to live.” As a matter of fact, the doctors were wrong---- he didn’t die. He can’t walk now but he uses a wheelchair(輪椅). He can’t feed himself and get in or out of bed himself. But he refused to give in to the condition. He talks with the help of a computer. After Oxford, Stephen went to Cambridge University. Three years later, in 1965, he became a doctor of philosophy(哲學).
Because of his serious health problems, it was difficult for him to draw diagrams(圖表) or to write. So he started to think in pictures. With this new way of thinking, he became one of the most famous scientists in the world. In 1891, he met the Pope(教皇) in Rome. They talked about his ideas. Then in 1988, he wrote his first important book, A Brief History of Time. It sold more than 5.5 million copies in 33 different languages.
