    A

An unemployed man is desperate to support his family. His wife watches TV all day and his three teenage kids have dropped out of high school to hang around with the local toughs. He applies for a cleaner’s job at a large firm and easily passes an aptitude test. The human resources manager tells him, “You will be hired at minimum wage, $5.15 an hour. Let me have your e-mail address so that we can contact you easily. Our system will automatically e-mail you all the forms and advise you when to start and where to report on your first day.” Greatly surprised, the man said that he has neither a computer nor an e-mail address. To this, the manager replies, “You must understand that to a company like ours that means you virtually do not exist. Without an e-mail address you can hardly expect to be employed by a high tech firm. Good day.”

Unable to believe what he hears, the man leaves. Not knowing where to turn and having $10 in his wallet, he walks past a farmers’ market and sees a stand selling beautiful tomatoes. He buys a crate (柳條箱), carries it to a busy corner and displays the tomatoes. In less than two hours he sells all the tomatoes and makes 100% profit. From that day on, he repeats the tomato business and becomes increasingly successful as time goes on. By the end of the fifth year he owns a fleet of nice trucks and a warehouse. The tomato company has put hundreds of homeless and jobless people to work and the business grossed a million dollars.

Planning for the future, he decides to buy some life insurance. The insurance adviser asks him for his e-mail address in order to send the final documents electronically. When the man replies that he doesn’t have time to mess with a computer and has no e-mail address, the insurance salesman is surprised, “ No computer? No Internet? Just think where you would be if you’d had all of that five years ago!” “Ha! If I’d had all of that five years ago, I would be sweeping floors at Microsoft and making $5.15 an hour!” the man replies.

Have you ever thought, “I wish I could take a year off and just travel around the world”? Well, three lucky American teenagers were able to do just that. The teens ―- two males and one female ---- got an all-expenses paid, yearlong hike to five continents.

This trip didn’t include any five-star hotels or shopping funs. Eighteen-year-old Jamie Fiel from Keller, Texas, 17-year-old Arsen Ewing from Canyon, California, and 16-year-old Tyler Robinson from Lincoln, Massachusetts, didn’t expect fancy treatment. They signed up for the experience of a lifetime, which included hard work, often uncomfortable accommodations, and encounters (遇到) with some of nature’s most dangerous animals and environments.

Jamie, Arsen, and Tyler were among hundreds of high school kids nominated (提名) by their science teachers to take this trip. Earthwatch Institute sponsored (贊助) this adventure. Each year, Earthwatch employs thousands of volunteers worldwide to help with scientific research projects.

The group went all around the world to get a close look at the most pressing environmental issues of our time. Their assignments were as varied as their locations, and included measuring and attending pink flamingos in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, and tracking giant sea turtles in Costa Rica.

As they worked with the Earthwatch scientists, Jamie, Arsen, and Tyler began to understand that we are at a critical moment in the life of our planet. Time for change is running out. As the teens went from country to country and witnessed different environmental dangers and challenges, they understood that solutions to important environmental issues start with the power of one person's actions. They realized that each of them can make a difference.

    60. These teenagers went on the journey around the world _____.

         D. They received a warm welcome every time they arrived at a new place.

    62. It can be inferred that Earthwatch Institute could be ____.

         A. an international university that takes in students from all over the world

         B. a TV station that makes programmes on the beautiful scenery of the earth

         C. a travel agency that organizes adventure trips specially for school children

         D. an organization that brings science to life for people concerned about earth’s environment

    63. What did they these teenagers learn from the journey?

    D

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers said, “Barbara, be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.” How right they were!

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang on there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, “I can do it!” when others shout, “No, you can’t!” It took years and years for the early work of Barbara Mc Clintock, a geneticist(遺傳學(xué)家) who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn’t let up on (放松) her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.

We are all born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder and it is this childlike wonder that gives enthusiastic people such youthful air, whatever their age. At 90, cellist (大提琴家) Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. As the music flowed through his fingers, his bent shoulders would straighten and joy would reappear in his eyes. As author and poet Samuel once wrote, “Years make the skin old, but to give up enthusiasm makes the soul old.

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money, title or power. Patricia Mcllrath, retired director of the Missouri Repertory Theater in Kansas City, was once asked where she got her enthusiasm. She replied, “My father, a lawyer, long ago told me, I never made a penny until I stopped working for money.”

If we cannot do what we love as a fulltime career, we can do it as a hobby. Elizabeth Layton of Wellsville, Kan, was 68 before she began to draw. This activity ended her sadness that had troubled her for at least 30 years, and the quality of her work led one critic to say, “I am persuaded to call Layton a genius.”

We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”. We need to live each moment whole-heartedly, with all our senses―finding pleasure in the sweet smell of a backyard garden, the simple picture of a six-year-old, and the beauty of a rainbow.

    68. The passage mainly shows us ____.

       A. enthusiasm leads to everything

    B. enthusiasm helps us to succeed to a greater degree

    C. enthusiasm makes us experience more life

    D. we can do nothing without enthusiasm

    69. From the example of the Nobel Prize winner Barbara Mc Clitock, we may find ____.

       A. enthusiasm can encourage us in difficult times

    B. enthusiastic people always get a deep pleasure from work

    C. you can’t make any achievement if you have no enthusiasm

    D. enthusiastic people are sure to gain great fame in the end

    70. The underlined sentence in Paragraph Three suggests ____.

       A. time and tide wait for no man              B. we grow old as time goes on

    C. people feel young with enthusiasm          D. our soul becomes old with enthusiasm

    71. The main idea of the last paragraph is ____.

       A. we should try heart and soul to win what we want

    B. enthusiasm can give us pleasure, though we have to sweat

    C. we have not enough money to buy what we need

    D. enthusiasm with sweat is what we need

    第二節(jié)  閱讀表達(dá)

    閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文后面的要求答題。(請(qǐng)注意問(wèn)題后的字?jǐn)?shù)要求)

Experts are finding your standard first aid response may be the worst thing you can do in an emergency. Here’s how to update your first aid kit.

    CUTS AND SCRAPES

When the skin isn’t broken, it’s hard to beat iodine (碘酒) for killing bacteria(細(xì)菌).       74.  _____________doctors use it to clean before surgery. But when there’s a cut, full ? strength iodine and rubbing alcohol can be harmful to skin cells, preventing healing. Putting iodine on cuts and wounds kills bacteria, but it won’t clean the wound. The most effective way is washing the wound with water.

    BURNS

If you spread some butter on the burn to ease the pain, it isn’t a good idea. Butter was thought to cool the burn, but it can cause infection and create and environment for bacterial growth. Run the burn under cool water immediately to help remove the heat and put an end to the damaging process. Wrap the burn with a bandage, and keep it clean and dry. If blisters (水泡) form, don’t break them.

    POISONING

When a child swallows anything poisonous, parents probably think they’re well prepared if ipecac (催吐劑) is on hand. Wrong. Ipecac was thought to be a good way to treat a child who had swallowed a poisonous substance, but not any more because it doesn’t always remove the toxic substance (有毒物質(zhì)). That may cause dehydration (脫水) and prevent doctors from giving other treatments.

    EXCESS BLEEDING

Everyone learns how to stop bleeding with a tourniquet (止血帶). But studies show this method causes more harm than good. Tourniquets can increase the risk of tissue damage or even the loss of a limb. Apply direct pressure to the wound. Simply place a clean cloth on the wound and press firmly; don’t remove the cloth, event if it gets black. If necessary, add more cloths. If that’s not enough, you can further slow the blood flow by applying pressure to the main artery (動(dòng)脈) of the upper arm or leg.

72.What is the best title of the passage? (Please answer within 6 words.)

73.Which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one?

However, by studying we know this method does more harm instead of doing more good.
