One
night I was sitting in my kitchen half-listening as 15-year-old brother Tommy
fought with 12-year-old brother Kevin. I didn’t pay attention when Kevin
charged up the stairs with the hurt on his face.
About 20 minutes
later, as I was walking upstairs I heard Kevin crying inside the bathroom. I
knocked on the door and asked, “Hey Kevin, do you want to talk?”
No response.
I tried again, “Why
don’t you come out of there?”
No response again.
So, joking around, I
grabbed some index cards (索引卡) and a pencil and wrote, “If you don’t
want to talk, we can write notes to each other.”
An hour later I was
sitting on the floor outside the bathroom with stacks of (堆積的)
index cards in front of me from Kevin. As I read one of Kevin’s notes, tears came
to my eyes. It said, “Nobody in this family cares about me. I’m not the
youngest, and I’m not the oldest, and I’m not talented. Tommy thinks I’m stupid
and Dad wishes he had the other Kevin as a kid because he’s better at
basketball. And you are never around to even notice me.”
Tears came to my eyes
as I wrote back to him, “You know Kevin, I really do love you and I’m sorry I
don’t always show it. I am here for you and you are loved in this family.”
There was no response
for a while, but then I heard a tearing sound coming from the inside the
bathroom. Kevin, who had run out of index cards, wrote on a torn up paper cup,
“Thanks.”
I wrote back, “For
what?” It returned to me with “Loving me” written on it.
Since then, I try my
best to give more attention to my family members. Kevin and I have a closer
relationship now, and sometimes when one of us notices that the other is upset,
we’ll smile and say, “Write it on a paper cup.”
36.Why did Kevin stay in the bathroom alone crying?

fought with him.
B. Because he hurt his face.
C. Because his mum did not stop
their fighting.
D. Because nobody tells him they
love him.
37. What did the writer learn from the incident?
A. She must stop the fighting
between family members.
B. The best way to communicate
with members of the family is by writing.
C. Everyone should show how he or
she loves his or her family members
D. It is hard to make friends with
your son or daughter.
38. What could be the reason that Kevin’s Dad doesn’t like him?
A. Kevin likes fighting with
others.
B. Kevin is always alone, not
communicating with others.
C. He is not good at playing
basketball.
D. Kevin is not as talented as his
brother.
39. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. My Son Kevin B.
Showing your love
C. Letters between Mom and Son D.A

tries their best to hit the puck with their hockey sticks into the other team’s
goal. Whichever team scores the most goals at the end of the three periods is
the winner. "Hockey has a lot of rules," says Alexander, "but
once you are used to it, it seems very natural.”
In

An important factor that plays a
part in susceptibility (容易感染) to colds is age. A study done by the
The general incidence (發(fā)生率)
of colds continues to decrease into maturity (成年人). Elderly people who are in good health have as few
as one or two colds every year. One exception is found among people in their
twenties, especially women, who show a rise in cold infections, because people
in this age group are most likely to have young children. Adults who delay
having children until their thirties and forties experience the same sudden
increase in cold infections.
The study also found that
economics plays an important role. As income increases, the frequency at which
colds are reported in the family decreases. Families with the lowest income
suffer about a third more colds than families at the upper end. Lower income
generally forces people to live in more crowded quarters than those typically
occupied by wealthier people, and crowding increases the opportunities for the
cold virus to travel from person to person. Low income may also in turn
influence diet. The degree to which poor nutrition affects susceptibility to
colds is not yet made clear, but a poor diet is suspected of lowing resistance
(抵抗力)
generally.
52. What kind of people are most likely to have colds, according to the
passage?
A. Infants
B. Children
C. teenagers.
D. Elderly people
53. Among the following people, who is most likely to get colds?
A. A healthy seventy-year-old
woman.
B. A thirty year old mother whose
child is five.
C. A man who has a proper diet in
a wealthy family.
D. A poor woman who has just given
birth to a child.
54. Susceptibility (容易感染) to colds can be influenced by all of the following
EXCEPT_________.
A. age B.
sex
C. weight D.
economics
55. What can be inferred
from the last sentence in the last paragraph?
A. Science has proved that poor nutrition leads to colds.
B. There is no connection between colds and poor nutrition.
C. Colds can influence a person’s diet.
D. It remains to be proved whether poor diet leads to colds.
