Next time you visit a fast-food restaurant, look closely at the ads for toys. About one out of every three toys that American children get each year comes from a fast-food restaurant. In fact, McDonald’s is the biggest toy company in the world. The company gives away or sells more than 1.5 billion dolls and other toys each year. The characters(角色) of Happy Meal toys are often from popular television shows and films.
Why do fast-food companies give kids toys when they are really in the business of selling food? Almost 50 years ago, McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc discovered that one of the best ways to sell hamburgers was to make children want to visit his restaurants. He later helped to make TV programs with a popular clown, Ronald McDonald. Kroc realized that ads aimed at children could get whole families to eat at his restaurants. "A child who loves our TV programs," Kroc said, "and brings her grandparents to McDonald’s, gives us two more customers."
McDonald’s ads have been very successful and Ronald McDonald is better known among children than Santa Claus, but this also brings some problems. Kids are eating too much junk food and more and more children are becoming fatter and fatter. About one out of five little kids eats French fries every day, which is very bad for their health.
Fast-food companies shouldn’t be allowed to use toys to sell food that’s bad for kids. Also, kids should be taught that they may pay more for it in the future because the food is bad for their health.
48. What is the best title of this passage?
A. Fast-food Companies. B. Fast-food Is Bad for Kids.
C. Fast-food Companies’ Toys. D. Toys for Kids.
49. Why do restaurants give kids toys when they come to eat?
A. Because kids love toys.
B. Because that can bring in more kids to come.
C. Because that can cause more adults to come.
D. Because kids want to take their grandparents to come for meals.
50. Most of the characters of toys in McDonald’s are ________.
A. not always free B. from popular television shows and films
C. better known than Santa Claus D. paid more than they are worth
51. What does the writer think fast-food companies should do from now on?
A. They shouldn’t make ads on TV. B. They should be closed down.
C. They should improve their prices. D. They shouldn’t use toys to sell junk food.

Taking care of your hair and nails
Look around your classroom. Your friends have different colors of hair: red, brown, golden, and black. Some of your friends have curly(卷的) hair; others have straight (直的)hair. Your whole body is covered with hair. You may have to look hard to see some of the hair. Look closely at your arm. It is covered with short thin hairs. Look closely at your face in a mirror. You will see tiny hairs growing there. The most obvious(明顯的) hair on your body is on your head.
Your hair and nails are made up of a kind of protein(蛋白質(zhì)). New hair and nails grow from special cells(細(xì)胞) in your skin(皮膚). Though the cells that form your hair and nails are alive, the hair and nails themselves are not alive. If hair and nails are not alive, you may ask, why do you need to take care of them?
Oil in your skin keeps the hair on your head shiny and healthy. It also makes the hair a little sticky. Dirty things from the air can stick to your hair. The best way to get off this dirt is to wash your hair with shampoo(洗發(fā)劑). You should wash your hair every two or three days to keep it clean. Washing your hair more often might cause it to become dry. If your hair is dry, you might need to use a special shampoo or something else. Brushing your hair, especially if it is long, also keeps it from becoming too dry. Your hair grows about 1/2 inch a month. If you’re like to wear your hair short, you need to get it cut from time to time.
Your fingernails and toenails cover and help protect the tips of your fingers and toes. Look at the nails on your fingers. You can easily see where the nail comes from under the skin. This is where new nail cells grow. Your nails grow about 1/4 inch each month. Sometimes your nails grow too long. They can catch on your clothing or other objects and break. You should take care of a broken nail. You should also clean away any dirt that collects in your nails. Keeping your nails clean can help prevent disease.

眉毛 C. 指甲 D.

54. How shall we take care of our hair properly?

B. Wash our hair every day.
C. Cut our hair short, wash it and brush it as often as possible.
D. Wash it, brush it and use shampoo on it in a right way.
55. From this passage we know both our hair and nails ____________.
A. are alive and can take care of themselves
