A

Google is a powerful tool for users of the electronic communications system called the Internet. Computer users connecting to the Internet can use Google to search for any word, name or idea. Google finds e1ectronic documents, or web pages, world news, information - almost anything. More than eighty- million people use the Google web page each month.

Two young men, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, started Google in l998. At that time, they were students at Stanford University in California. They created a search engine, a way to look for words on the Internet. The technology they developed chooses web pages with the links closest to the word or words the user is searching for.

Google was not the first Internet search engine. But people found it easy to use. Today, Google performs two-hundred-million searches every day. It can search more than four-hundred-million web pages at one time.  Yet each search takes less than one second. Google has even become an action word: to "Google" means to search for information on the Internet.

The search service that Google offers is free. But Google also provides links to web pages of companies that sell goods and services. Companies pay Google every time someone uses it to connect with their web pages. The amount a company pays depends on its size.

Google's business has grown very quickly. The company made almost 10,000,000 dollars in 2003. Its profit was more than 1,000,000 dollars.

Late last month, GoogIe announced that it wanted to become a public company. This means that GoogIe will sell its ownership shares to the public. The company hopes to raise about 2,700,000 dollars this way. But it .has not said how many shares it would sell. It also has not set a price for the shares or the date when they would be sold.

Some business experts have criticized Google for not releasing enough information about the company before the sale. But there is no question that investors are interested in the company 's shares.

People who may gain the most from the sale are Mr. Brin and Mr. Page. Each man owns l5% of the company. After the sale, they could both be worth several thousand million dollars.

Pills help forget bad memories

Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence (暴力) and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physica1 and emotional hurt. Often they again and again experience these experiences in their terrible dreams.

Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill (藥丸), which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly remove, the effect of painful memories.

In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body let out chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are removed.

The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pi1ls that prevent or treat soldiers' terrible memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. "Some memories can ruin(毀壞) people's lives. They come back to you when you don't want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions," said Roger Pitman. A professor of psychiatry(精神病學(xué)) at Harvard Medical School. "This could learn a lot from that suffering."

But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our characters. They also help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

"All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were terrible at the time, which makes us who we are. I 'm not sure we 'd want to wipe those memories out," said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist (倫理學(xué)家).

Some people fear that although the drug would first be used in only very serious cases, it would become more and more common. "People always have the ability to misuse (濫用)science," said Joseph LeDoux. a New York University memory researcher. "All we want to do is help people have better control of memories.”

60. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Memories can be experienced in dreams, whether sweet or bad.

B. American researchers now have developed a pill which can remove painful memories

C. The test shows that the drug may reduce the emotional effects of memories

a. Pills could reduce a lot of suffering.

b. Memories help us all avoid the mistakes of the past.

c. Some bad memories usually come with painfu1 emotions.

d. People have the ability to misuse science.

A.  a and b       B.  b and c       C.  c and d      D.  a and c

62. How does the drug make people forget bad memories?

A. People have better control over memories.

B. It produces some chemicals to remove the memories.

C. It stops the body releasing chemicals that fix, memories in the brain.

D. It helps people avoid the mistakes of the past.

63. Which of the following does Rebecca Dresser agree with?

A. Some memories can ruin people 's lives.

B. People want to get rid of bad memories.

C. Experiencing bad events makes us different: from others.

D. The pill will reduce People's suffering from bad memories.

A German author named Johnanners Von Buttlar tells a surprising story in his best selling book called Time-slip. Von Buttlar writes that in India, there are special, mysterious libraries. These libraries don’t have books. Instead, they have very large palm ( 棕櫚樹  )leaves which are hundreds of years old. The life story of a person is written on each palm leaf. The palm leaf tells the story of the person’s past, present, and future. Wise men wrote the stories on these palm leaves centuries ago. However, the truly surprising thing is that, if any person living today visits one of the palm leaf libraries, this person will find a palm leaf with his or her own life story. The palm leaf will tell this person’s past, present, and future. Perhaps you are wondering how it is possible for wise men who lived centuries ago to know the lives of person living today. Von Buttlar explains that these wise men had the power to know the future. With this power, the wise men could foresee ( 預(yù)知 ) the events in the lives of people who would be born centuries after them. The wise men could also foresee which of these people would go to the palm leaf libraries, and so wrote the palm leaves only for these persons.

64. According to the passage, what will a person find if he has the chance to visit one of the palm libraries?

A. He will find his own life story on one of the palm leaves.

B. He will find the life story of any person he wants to know about.

C.      He will find the life stories of people who lived thousands of years ago.

D.     He will find palm leaves on which the wise men’s life stories are written

65 In your opinion, what kind of people were the wise men mentioned in the passage?

A. they were great thinkers.

B.      They were scientists.

C.      They were story-makers

D.     They were fortune-tellers

66. It can be inferred from the passage that Von Buttlar believes _________________.

A.  those wise men just made up some life stories to fool people

B.      a person’s future was decided by those wise men

C.      the life stories written by those men are true

D.     those wise men just happened to find out the life stories of people

67. If there is any doubt about the truth of Von Buttlar’ story, what is it?

A.  In fact there are no much palm leaf libraries in India.

B.      It is impossible to write stories on palm leaves.

C.      He has never been to such palm leaf libraries in India.

D.     He just gives his own explanation for such a surprising story.

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents.

They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they are too serious and too strict with their children; and that they seldom give their children a free hand.

It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young.

For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It it one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.

When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.

Young people often make their parents angry at their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble, it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their ways of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.

Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control. If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

74. Older people tend to _________.

B.      act on the spot without thinking very carefully

C.      plan things before they act
