Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago. He studied the observations of comets(彗星)which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.

However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician. Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(橢圓形).

Now Halley set to work. He figured out(解決;計(jì)算出)the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearance had been 75 to 76 years apart.

This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it, the more his thought that there had been three different comets as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.

It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain thought to make a prediction(預(yù)言)of what would happen in the future. He decided that this would appear in the year 1758.There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky. Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet had been called Halley's comet, in his honour.

6.Edmund Halley figured out the orbit of ______.

A.some different comets appearing several times

B.the same comet appearing at different times

C.three different comets appearing at the same time

D.several comets appearing at the same time

7.Halley made his discovery ______.

A.by doing experiments

B.by means of his own careful observation

C.by using the working of other scientists

D.by chance

8.Halley made a surprising, but correct prediction in the year______.

A.1704  B.1705  C.1706  D.1707

9.This passage in general is about ______.

A.Halley and other scientists

B.the orbit of a comet

C.Newton and Halley

D.Halley and his discovery

10.Which of the following is TRUE?

A.Edmund Halley was an American scientist.

B.Halley made his discovery by doing experiments.

C.Isaac Newton was a famous mathematician.

D.The orbit of a comet had the shape of a round.

6.解析:選B。推理判斷題。根據(jù)文章的第四段“He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times”及上文提到的看彗星的時(shí)間分別是1531年、1607年、1682年可判斷正確答案為B。

7.解析:選C。細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)文章第一段第二句“He studied the observations of comets which other scientists had made.”可知,哈雷的發(fā)現(xiàn)是在研究其他科學(xué)家們的觀察中得出來的。

8.解析:選B。計(jì)算題。文中第五段的“He decided that this would appear in the year 1758.There were 53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested”這句話告訴我們:他預(yù)言彗星出現(xiàn)的時(shí)間是1758年,而這個(gè)預(yù)言還要經(jīng)過53年才能驗(yàn)證,由此可以推斷出哈雷做出這個(gè)預(yù)言的時(shí)間是1705年。

9.解析:選D。主旨大意題。縱觀全文,不難看出,文章的中心就是哈雷以及他的發(fā)

Mt.Qomolangma was first conquered(征服)in 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing, his guide, became the climbers to reach the top.More than 750 times have people tried to conquer the mountain, but not all successful, yet every climber knows the dangers. This doesn’t stop teams of climbers arriving at the base camp every year with the courage of reaching the top.

Two such climbers, and two unlucky ones are Scott Fischer and Rob Hall.Fischer, an American guide with much experience, was lost in a terrible storm which swept across the mountain.A rescue team found him and his friend, but didn’t manage to bring Fischer to safety in the terrible conditions because he was dying.New Zealander Rob Hall, another experienced climber and guide, was lost near the top. These two men had something in common:they were both guides and always took a “tour” of less experienced climbers up the mountain.

There is a lot that can go wrong in an action to reach the top of Mt.Qiomolangma:a sudden change in weather conditions or a wrong turning.Planes will only be sent to rescue if they have been paid for in advance. In spite of all these there is a business in leading guided tours to the top.Wealthy mountain climbers can now pay 64 000 or more to achieve their aim.

Many people wonder how guides can look after their inexperienced climbers when they fail to keep themselves alive.Steve Bell, also a guide who has recently led a team to Mt Qiomolangma, believes that they are safer than others, because the guide can ask a weak climber to turn back at any point if he feels that climber is a danger to the team.

Whether these expeditions(遠(yuǎn)征)are safe or not, many climbers feel they have turned Mt.Qiomolangma into a business, like a park for the very rich people. One truth, however, will always remain:it doesn’t matter how much money you have, if you make a mistake on Mt.Qiomolangma, the possible result will be death.

At times they nearly lose the battle to keep their spirits up.

This story provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of early American settlers.

F. Jane Eyre (Charlotte Brontë)

All of which circumscribe her life and position when she becomes governess to the daughter of the mysterious, sardonic and attractive Mr Rochester.

However, there is great kindness and warmth in this epic love story, which is set against the magnificent backdrop of the Yorkshire moors.

The significant words found on an old key —"If I rest, I will rust"—would be an excellent motto for those who are tired of their slightest bit of idleness

(懶散).

Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their abilities polished by constant use, so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gates that guard the entrance to the professions, to science, art, literature, or agriculture —- every department of human efforts.

Industry(勤奮) keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement.

If Hugh Miller, after working hard all day in a mine, had devoted his evenings to rest and relaxation, he would never have become a famous geologist. The outstanding mathematician, Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to the science of mathematics, if he had given his spare moments to idleness. Had the little Scottish boy, Ferguson, allowed his busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the positions of the stars by a string of beads, he would never have become a famous astronomer.
