ERIKA Harold, a 22 - year - old Harvard - bound law student from Illinois, was crowned (加冕) Miss America 2003 on Saturday, Sept. 21,2002.Harold, who entered the 81 - year -old beauty competition as Miss Illinois, bent her head momentarily in joyful surprise before Miss America 2002 Katie Harman crowned her on Saturday with a tiara and sent her down the runway to the anthem: “There She Is, Miss America.” Harold, the Urbana, Illinois native, who was home - schooled until the fourth grade, put off going to Harvard Law School to compete in the pageant (盛會(huì)), which has struggled in recent years to keep up its practical use for young American women. She will receive a $50,000 scholarship and spend her 12-month term raising her social platform of enabling youth to fight against violence, including the kind that took off the lives of 15 people at Colorado's Columbine High School in 1999.“I want kids to be able to break that cycle of violence,” said Harold, telling a press conference that she was once bullied (欺侮) in school. “If Miss America can be bullied, then anyone can be bullied.” Her goal is to study public interest law and public policy at Harvard Law School when her term ends next September. But in the meantime, she could earn as much as US $ 250,000 from a lot of Miss America speeches. Harold, a University of Illinois graduate, is the fifth Miss America from Illinois. The last was Miss America 1998 Kate Shindle, who was crowned in 1997. Originally designed in the early 1920s as a way to attract offseason tourists to New Jersey shore resorts(勝地), the 81 - year - old Miss America Pageant first gained icon status (偶像地位) in the depths of the Great Depression and during World War II. Its period of greatest popularity came in the 1950s with the coming of television. By the late 1960s, the yearly competition was already an aim of feminists (女權(quán)主義者) and was heading for years of falling TV viewership and repeated challenges to its practical use.

In the 1940s, Pinehaven Park was one of Crafton City's loveliest recreation(娛樂(lè))areas. Over 40 acres of woods and fields were open to the public. In the 1950s, part of the park was taken over by Crafton City's garbage. Fifteen acres were to be used for landfill disposal(理置). As time went on, more and more of the park was used for garage disposal and less for recreation. Two years ago, the park was closed to the public for good. Along with household garbage, industrial chemicals had for years been dumped (傾倒)in the Pinehaven landfill. These poisonous chemicals had begun to seep(滲)back up through the soil. All of Pinehaven Park had become dangerously polluted.
Last year, the fish in the Crafton River began to die. After a series of investigations(研究), it became clear that the people of Crafton City were not to blame. 100~150 miles upstream, big paper mills were dumping industrial wastes into the river. Little by little, the level of poison in the river began to rise. Finally, it became so polluted that the fish themselves could no longer survive.
Downtown Crafton used to be a quiet area. Ten years of remarkable growth changed that in a big hurry. But with Crafton City's new prosperity(繁榮)came a new problem: air pollution. And it is a serious problem. Air pollution levels in Crafton are regularly reaching those of the nation's large industrial cities.

D.Industrial growth and progress have resulted in the pollution of Crafton City's water, air, and soil.
(2)According to the passage, what portion of the park had originally been marked for use as a garbage dump?
[ ]
A.Less than half B.Exactly half
C.About one third D.Most of it
(3)As it is used in the passage, the phrase“for good”means ________.
[ ]
A.practically B.for ever
C.thoroughly D.a(chǎn)dvantageously
(4)According to the passage, one result of dumping industrial chemicals into the landfill was that ________.
[ ]
A.the land became unsafe for humans
B.the animals on the land died
C.the poisonous chemicals were washed into the nearby river
D.the smoke from the chemicals polluted the air surrounding the landfill
