Believe it or not, many of the biggest change in how English is spoken have come from common people in the streets. And one of the most important places which English has changed is the playground! These playgrounds can be any place where the young people meet, such like a sports field or a beach. Often words using by black kids in big cities become popular for other kids many years later. On the beaches of southern California, teenagers invented words to describe what they felt when they surfed. These words found its way into the high schools and then to other places. Similar changes happen among young people in Ireland and Australia. Children from one group would find ways to play with another group more easily. Often they made new words just develop an identity different from their parents.

A new argument has been put forward as to whether penguins are disturbed by the presence of tourists in Antarctica.
Previous research by scientists from Keil University in Germany monitored Adelie penguins and noted that the birds’ heart rates increased dramatically at the sight of a human as far as 30 meters away. But new research using an artificial egg, which is equipped to measure heart rates, disputes this. Scientists from the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge say that a slow moving human who does not approach the nest too closely, is not viewed as a threat by penguins.
The earlier findings have been used to partly explain the 20 per cent drop in populations of certain types of penguins near tourist sites. However, tour operators have continued to insist that their activities do not adversely affect wildlife in Antarctica, saying they encourage non-disruptive behavior in tourists, and that the decline in penguin numbers is caused by other factors.
Amanda Nimon of the Scott Polar Research Institute spent three southern hemisphere summers at Cuverville Island in Antarctica studying penguin behavior towards humans. “A nesting penguin will react very differently to a person rapidly and closely approaching the nest,” says Nimon. “First they exhibit large and prolonged(延長(zhǎng)) heart rate changes and then they often flee the nest leaving it open for predators (掠奪者) to fly in and remove eggs or chicks.” The artificial egg, specially for the project, monitored both the parent who had been ‘disturbed’ when the egg was placed in the nest and the other parent as they both took it in turns to guard the nest.
However, Boris Culik, who monitored the Adelie penguins, believes that Nimon’s findings do not invalidate his own research. He points out that species behave differently — and Nimon’s work was with Gentoo penguins. Nimon and her colleagues believe that Culik’s research was methodologically flawed(使無效) because the monitoring of penguins’ responses needed capturing and restraining(控制) the birds and fitting them with heart-rate transmitters. Therefore, argues Nimon, it would not be surprising if they became stressed on seeing a human subsequently.
1.According to the passage, what overall message is presented?
A. No firm conclusions are drawn.
B. Neither Culik’s nor Nimon’s findings are of much value.
C. Penguin reduction is closed related to tourist behavior.
D. Tourists are not responsible for the fall in penguin numbers.
2.Which ONE argument of the following is stated in the passage?
A. Penguins are harder to research when they have young.
B. Tour operators should encourage tourists to avoid Antarctica.
C. Not all penguins behave in the same way.
D. Penguins need better protection from tourists.
3.What do you notice about the views presented in the passage?

Do you know what a big dream is? 1. Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow.
The Self
Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego(自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to. 2. Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true.
3.
Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friend destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind.
The World
If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world. 4. In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at.
The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well. 5.
A. Does a big dream show one’s future ?
B. They simply fail until they succeed.
C. How Big Dreams Die
D. It is the last and the most terrible barrier.

It may not be as easy as you think to build a foundation for your child of family values. Often we believe that our child will pick up on our values if they live in the same home. While they may pick up many of our values, parents need to remember they are not the only influence in their child’s life. These outside values often compete with family values for your child’s attention. If we do not make a conscious effort to instill our values into our children, they may not get instilled at all.
I wish I had learned that lesson a little earlier. I thought if I lived my values for my children they would pick them up and make their own. Sometimes this happened and sometimes it didn’t. I often see twenty-something “kids” who have no faith in many of the values of their family in favor of the values of their friends. Children will often pick up the negative you show quicker than the positive, so the positive things need extra focus to set them.
Some of the influences your children face every day include their church, their school, their friends, any clubs or sporting groups they are part of and more. Kids spend many hours a day at school and with their friends. Sometimes in the business of life, we suppose our children will obtain that foundation we want for them.
Instilling a foundation of family values to sustain(維持) your child requires more than living it in front of them. That is important, but building up your child with this important foundation must become intentional.
That means we plan times to gather as a family. We plan activities together that show the values we want to pass on. We talk about our values; we live our values; we discuss the values of others and how they differ from ours; we constantly look for opportunities and make our own opportunities to share these values in word or deed with our children.
Family values give our children a foundation to build upon. It helps them know they are loved and gives them a sense of belongings. Upon this sure foundation, they can spread their wings and grow to become parents who share these same values with their own children.
1.The underlined word “instill our values into” in the 1st paragraph probably means “______”.
A. get our ideas out of B. impress our ideas on
C. collect our ideas for D. force our ideas upon
2.We can learn from the passage that children ______.
A. sustain their family values easily
B. will hold their family values with age
C. often discuss family values of others
D. accept negative values more quickly
3.Family values can be passed on if ______.
A. we live with our children
B. parents show positive things
C. parents foster them intentionally
D. we plan times to gather with other families
4.The passage mainly tells us about ______.
A. the importance and the way to pick up family values
B. a lesson the writer learned in educating his(her) kids
C. the influences the children face while growing up
D. some negative and positive family values

科目:高中英語 來源:2017屆黑龍江哈爾濱六中高三上期中考英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
Telepathy (心靈感應(yīng)) is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It's an instinct (本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct, we're using resources within the unconscious mind. When the resources of two persons' unconscious minds link together into the same frequency (頻率), we call it telepathy.
We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you,you are most likely to be better at sending.
You can easily put your ability to the test. Thinking of somebody and wish him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try ‘feeling’ who is contacting you. Don't guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However,if neither of these works for you, that doesn't mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.
Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams have a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other's unconscious mind.
Telepathy & relationship. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other's mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other's mind through time spent together; the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child's eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother's deep desire to protect her child from harm.
1.Telepathy happens when one ________.
A. has a similar dream with another person.
B. is good at guessing
C. wants to call his/her best friend
D. doesn't know a stranger
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The more people separate, the more likely that telepathy will occur in their life.
B. Telepathy occurs when people make use of their five senses.
C. Telepathy happens when people live far away and have no chance to see one another again.
D. One is better at sending than receiving telepathy if one receives a friend’s call as one wishes.
3.Which of the following belongs to telepathy?
A. Your action in your dream.
B. People's communication over the telephone.
C. A mother's sense of her child being in danger.
D. A couple's long separation.
4.Which one can be the title of the passage?
A. Receiving Telepathy B. Dream of telepathy
C. Telepathy: People’s Dream D. Mind-to-Mind Contact
