In addition to self-awareness, imagination, and conscience, it is the fourth quality - independent
will - that really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make decisions and choices
and to act in agreement with them. It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon, to actively carry
out the program we have developed through the other three qualities.
The human will is an amazing thing. Time after time, it has overcome unbelievable difficulties. The
Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic(給人深刻印象的) evidence to the value, the power of the
independent will.
But as we examine this quality in the context of effective self-management, we realize it's usually not
the dramatic, the visible, the once-in-a-lifetime, up-by-the-bootstraps(自立自強(qiáng)的) effort that brings
lasting success. This special ability comes from learning how to use this great quality in the decisions
we make every day.
The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by
our personal honesty. Honesty is, fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It's our ability to make
and keep promises to ourselves, to "walk our talk."
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what "first things" are, it
is management that puts them first, day-by-day, moment-by-moment. Management is discipline (training
to be self-controlled), carrying it out.
Discipline obtains from belief-belief in a set of values, belief in an overriding(最主要的) purpose, to a
long-term or short term goal that must be carried out.
In other words, if you are an effective manager of yourself, your discipline comes from within; it is a
function of your independent will. You are a follower of your own deep values and their source. And
you have the will, the quality to control your feelings and moods rather than depend on others or have
your work half done.

Title The power of independent will
Theme Independent will makes self-management (1) ____    .
Reasons The example given to (2)        power of independent will is amazing.
Power of independent will helps to make one's (3)       every day.
(4)       is very important to develop our independent will.
It's our ability to have our promises made and (5)       .
Suggestions Effective managers should know (6)     should be done first.
Effective managers with discipline should (7)        to their  promises.
(8)       You (9)        your deep values.
Your feelings and moods are able to be (10)       .
1. effective   2.prove/show/indicate     3. decisions   4.Honesty   5. kept

As civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic
essentials of life-food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using
technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the other
hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order to earn
a given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that necessary
for comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours.
I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be
working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also
expect to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows
that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the
housewives will wish to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as
scrubbing the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or
sweeping, or making beds.
By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be
trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen or
more standard operations, when switched by the housewife.

1. As civilization develops in the direction of technology, ________.
A. the basic essentials of life must be supplied
B. it is important to supply the basic essentials of life
C. it is no longer so important as it was in the past to supply all the basic essentials of life
D. it is not necessary to supply the basic essentials of life

2. According to the author, we are faced with________.
A. the choice of providing and fulfilling our needs
B. the choice of using technology
C. the choice of earning a standard of living
D. a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs to reduce the number of working hours

3. What alternative will mankind have chosen in future?
A. To leave our standard of living at this level and work shorter hours.
B. To raise our standard of living.
C. To fulfill needs which have been regarded as unnecessary.
D. To lower our standard of living and work shorter hours.

4. Now most housewives wish to________.
A. stop doing their housework
B. do more housework to improve their life
C. get rid of the heavy burden of their housework
D. do only simple and light housework

5. It can be inferred that robots will be invented_________.
A. to take the place of housewives
B. to help manage a family
C. to do the routine of housework instead of human
D. to provide the daily necessities for man

閱讀理解。
Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. "I was a clothes addict," he jokes.
"I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled." Today David
wears casual clothes-khaki pants and sports shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears necktie. "I'm working
harder than ever," David says, "and I need to feel comfortable."
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work in the United
States. The change from formal to casual office wear has been gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies
allowed their employees to wear casual clothes on Friday (but only on Friday). This became known as "dress-
down Friday" or "casual Friday." "What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit for employees has
really become an everyday thing," said business consultant Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual clothes? One reason is that
it's easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a casual dress code. "A lot of young people don't
want to dress up for work," says the owner of a software company, "so it's hard to hire people if you have a
conservative dress code." Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when they are
wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and Company, 85 percent of employers
said that they believe that casual dress improves employee morale (士氣). Only 4 percent of employers said
that casual dress has a negative impact on productive. Supporters of casual office wear also argue that a casual
dress code helps them save money. "Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day," one person said.
"For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes."
1. David Smith refers to himself as having been "a clothes addict" because _____.
A. he often wore khaki pants and a sports shirt
B. he couldn't stand a clean appearance
C. he wanted his clothes to look neat all the time
D. he didn't want to spend much money on clothes
2. David Smith wears casual clothes now, because _____.
A. they make him feel at ease when working
B. he cannot afford to buy expensive clothes
C. he looks handsome in casual clothes
D. he no longer works for any company
3. According to this passage, which of the following statements is FALSE?
A. Many employees don't like a conservative dress code.
B. Comfortable clothes make employees more productive.
C. A casual clothes code is welcomed by young employees.
D. All the employers in the US are for casual office wear.
4. In this passage, the following advantages of casual office wear are mentioned EXCEPT _____.
A. saving employees' money
B. making employees more attractive
C. improving employees' motivation
D. making employees happier

Lisa, a 25year old from Beijing, recently places a number of very unpleasant statements on the
Internet regarding the elderly. They include things like "don't  rely on others", "don't expect others to
help", "don't be talkative", and "dont't be so stubborn". The underlying message was that elderly
people should not take advantage of their old age to demand special favours from others, particularly
from the young. This of course flies_in_the_face_of the Chinese tradition of respecting the elderly. But,
in my opinion, Lisa's "requests" might not be totally unreasonable.Old people do sometimes behave
like they're "stubborn"and "talkative". Still, the young woman is rudely insensitive to why the elderly
behave that way.As people get old, they become increasingly weakened physically. So it's natural for
them to ask for more help from others. As their memories decline, they tend to be talkative because
they easily forget what has just been said. The American psychologists D. R.Atkinson and G. Hackett
said that the brain is characterized by flexibility. It has the ability (most pronounced up to the age of 12)
to change itself as a result of experience. But, as the brain ages, this flexibility decreases. As a result, the
elderly are often inflexible in their ways.
Therefore, old people need real care and deserve to be taken care of.Many have devoted most of
their lives to the wellbeing of the family or social.Their aging is no reason for showing prejudice (偏見(jiàn))
to them. According to Chinese tradition, older people are to be respected. As are Westerners.
I live in the US for eight years, and in Hong Kong for 13.Never have I seen or heard anyone who
would openly tell old people "to behave themselves".
We may encourage old people to be more selfreliant. But rudely demanding that they do so is ageism.
That's where the difference lies.

1. What does Lisa think of the elderly?

A. The elderly hate to rely on the others.
B. The elderly should take advantage of their old age.
C. They are not talkative but stubborn.
D. The elderly always demand special favors from the young.

2. The underlined part in the first paragraph can be replaced by"________".

A. expresses the apparent meaning of
B. shows disagreement with
C. deals with the surface meaning of
D. draws a conclusion from

3. What's the writer's attitude towards this problem?

A. The young woman is too sensitive to why the elderly behave that way.
B. The elderly naturally ask for more help from others, because their brain is characterized by flexibility.
C. The elderly are often inflexible in their ways, which makes the young suffer.
D. The elderly deserve to be taken care of and we shouldn't show our prejudice because of their aging.

4. The last three paragraphs really want to show that________.

A. we should respect the elderly
B. the people in the US or Hong Kong respect the older people
C. old people should be encouraged to be more selfreliant
D. different ideas about the elderly are allowed to exist

People of older generations often complain about the selfishness and lack of respect they find among
the younger generations. It is undeniable that some young people do need to be educated on mutual
respect and concern for others, especially senior members of society. But we older people should have
some understanding about the young, too.
Today's society is rather different from what it was when we were young. The social, financial and
psychological pressure today's young people have to face is much higher than what we did back in the
1950s through the 1990s.
They are in the early stage of their career. They have to find proper jobs to support themselves and
work diligently to rise. They have to live in smaller houses, because they are unable to afford the soaring
housing prices.Considering these facts, we may find it understandable why young people sometimes
appear aloof and disrespectful.
I don't mean that we should put up with it without reminding them of the need to mend_their_ways.
What I mean is that we should be more patient, understanding and tolerant toward them.
For instance, when we get up on a bus or a subway train, we should not complain about not being
offered a seat.A young person does not offer a senior citizen his/her seat probably because he/she has
to travel a long way to work or because the carriage is too crowded for one to move at all.
In fact, young people do offer their seats to the seniors.I seldom take a bus or a subway train, but
more than a quarter of the times I have done so, I was offered a seat. That is fair enough, given that I do
not look so senile.
But on occasions, I have seen old people not showing any sign of gratitude when offered a seat.
China has become an aging society since the end of the last century.According to a recent survey,
people older than 60 accounted for 11.4 percent of the nation's population. And the percentage is
expected to rise, given the onechild family planning policy our country has practiced for more than three
decades.
In other words, the younger generations will have to shoulder a heavier burden in looking after the
parents and grandparents.Theoretically, there will come a day when one couple may have to support
four parents and eight grandparents. What a burden it would be!
All this demands that we show more concern and understanding to our younger generations.

1. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Should the young show respect for the old?
B. Young people deserve more understanding
C. Who should be blamed, the young or the old?
D. A debate between the young and the old

2. The author's attitude towards young people not giving up seats to the old is________.

A. unreasonable
B. unacceptable
C. understandable
D. unusual
3. According to the passage, the underlined phrase "mend their ways" is closest in meaning to "______".

A. give way to the old
B. stop behaving badly
C. respect the old
D. take on more responsibilities

4. Which of the following will the author agree with?

A. It is the old rather than the young who are to blame for their misunderstanding.
B. It is time that the society lightened the burden on the shoulder of the young.
C. It is time to change China's onechild family planning policy.
D. The old and the young need mutual understanding.

5. How is the passage mainly developed?

A. By reasoning.
B. By comparing.
C. By listing examples.
D. By following the natural time order.

When I stepped out the plane from Miami into Charlotte, North Carolina, airport for a connecting
flight home, I immediately knew something was wrong. Lots of desperate people crowded the terminal.
I quickly learned that flights headed to the Northeast were called off because of a storm. The earliest they could get us out of Charlotte was Tuesday. It was Friday. A gate agent stood on the counter and shouted, "Don't ask us for help! We cannot help you!"
I joined a crowd that ran from terminal to terminal in search of a flight out. Eventually, I found six
strangers willing to rent a van with me. We drove through the night to Washington, where I took a train
the rest of the way to Providence.
The real problem, of course, is that incidents like this happen every day, to everyone who flies, more
and more often. It really gets to me, though, because for eight years I was on the other side, as a flight
attendant for Trans-World Airlines (TWA).
I know the days are gone when attendants could be written up if we did not put the lines napkins
with the TWA logo in the lower right-hand corner of the first-class diners' trays. As are the days when
there were three dinner options on flights from Boston to Los Angeles in economy class. When, once,
stuck on a tarmac(機(jī)場(chǎng)停機(jī)坪)in Newark for four hours, a planeload of passengers got McDonald's
hamburgers and fries by thoughtfulness of the airline. I have experienced the decline of service along with
the rest of the flying public. But I believe everything will change little by little, because I remember the
days when to fly was to soar (翱翔). The airlines, and their employees, took pride in how their
passengers were treated. And I think the days are sure to come back one day in the near future.

1.Many people crowded the terminal because _______.

A. they were ready to board on the planes
B. something was wrong with the terminal
C. the flights to the Northeast were canceled
D. the gate agent wouldn't help the passengers

2. How did the writer get to Providence at last?

A. by air
B. by van
C. by train
D. by underground

3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Incidents happened to those who fly quite often.
B. The writer used to be a flight attendant for Trans-World Airlines.
C. Even a small mistake might cause complaints from passengers in the past.
D. McDonald's hamburgers and fries were among regular dinner options.

4. What can be implied from the passage?

A. The writer lived in Charlotte, North Carolina.
B. The writer thought the service was not as good as it used to be.
C. The writer with other passengers waited to be picked up patiently.
D. Passengers would feel proud of how they were treated on the plane.
