When I was a kid, my siblings(兄弟姐妹) and I used to have ice cream for dessert.Every day, we would choose which ice cream flavor to have, whether to eat it in a cone or a bowl. Then we would happily wolf down our treat(款待) as fast as we could.
Once, though, when I was probably about 10 0r 11, our grandpa came to visit. Grandpa always had a unique view on things. On this particular occasion, my sister and I were making bets as to who could finish their ice cream first. With a smile, Grandpa said, "Why would you want to finish first? If you eat slowly, it will last longer. You should have acompetition to see who can finish last." Even now, I always try to taste my ice cream, but of course this is about more than just dessert.
Too often, kids want to scramble(爭(zhēng)奪) for more, whether it's more ice cream, more toys, or more friends. This habit persists into our adult years, and we end up constantly scrambling for more. We never develop the skill of appreciating what we have. If we learn to recognize this pattern and change it, we can raise our kids a little differently, giving them the tool of tasting their proverbial dessert, which could lead to a happier life for them.
What my grandpa taught me that day was really that if you take the opportunity to enjoy what's in front of you, the pleasure will last longer and be more rewarding than if you rush through life always trying to get the next treat. It's a lesson that, I think, has made my adult life happier, as well. These days, when I want something, I wait as long as I can before I allow myself to have it. Then, when I finally get it, I make sure to treasure it as long as possible, because I know that, no matter what it is, it will be gone all too soon.

D. Save for the future.
4.We can infer from the last paragraph that author
A. longs for the days when they ate ice cream
B. doesn't like ice cream as much as before

George Gershwin was born in New York City in 1898. His parents were Russian Jews who had immigrated to the United States. George and his two brothers and sister had a close, happy family life. George liked playing games on the streets of New York. He liked exploring the city. He did not like school or studying.
While exploring the city, George heard jazz and blues music in and out of public drinking places. However, he did not become seriously interested in music until he heard another boy playing the violin in a concert at his school. George began to take piano lessons. His teacher was a fine classical musician. He immediately recognized George's unusual ability. The teacher wrote about him to a friend: "I have a student who will make his mark in music, if anybody will. The boy is a genius, without doubt. "
George studied classical piano. But his strongest interest continued to be jazz and popular music. At the age of fifteen, he left school and went to work in the music business. At that time, the New York City street where most music publishers had their offices was called "Tin Pan Alley." The piano players played the songs all day long to interested singers and other performers. George Gershwin was one of the youngest piano players in Tin Pan Alley. Soon, he was considered one of the finest there. He was already writing his own songs. He succeeded in getting one published when he was only eighteen years old.
George Gershwin was now a real composer. The rest of his life was an unbroken record of success. He wrote song after song. His ideas were so endless that he was not even troubled when he once lost some music he had been writing. "There is plenty more where that came from," he said.
George Gershwin had his first big hit in 1919, when he was twenty-one years old. It was a song called "Swanee." A popular entertainer, Al Jolson, sang the song. "Swanee" was made into one of the first musical recordings. George Gershwin was suddenly famous.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2015-2016學(xué)年江西豐城中學(xué)高一下學(xué)期第一次月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
“I’d like to be at a healthier weight,” a friend told me. “But we just don’t have the money to buy expensive diet foods and there isn’t enough money to join a gym.” Many people feel that way — that a healthy diet and exercise plan is out of reach because of their high cost. Don’t lose hope! We’ll be looking at ways to make healthy choices without spending too much money.
First you don’t need to buy the expensive pre-prepared “diet foods.” Back in the early 1970s when I started housekeeping, 90% of the food I bought was ingredients. Very few things were preprocessed (預(yù)處理的). Now 90% of the food you find in the store is quick food. That’s a bad thing.
Quick foods like boxed “just add hamburger” meals have had the fiber (纖維) removed to make them faster to prepare. Take a look at the label (標(biāo)簽) on that box. It often has low numbers listed under “fiber” because fiber takes longer to digest. If the low fiber meal is digested, the result is that your body begins to store fat. Besides, your body is short of nutrients (營(yíng)養(yǎng)物質(zhì)). You will be driven to eat more to try to make up for the low quality of the food you are eating.
And then there are the chemicals the producers add to the quick meals to make them palatable. If not, the stuff would taste like cardboard and you wouldn’t enjoy it. However, these chemicals certainly aren’t good for your health.
What’s the answer? Buy whole ingredients and give up the expensive, low nutrition, processed foods. Do the cooking yourself and you will have control over what is in your food — and it will cost less, too.
1. People who find it hard to get a healthier weight think _____.
A. they had too much diet food
B. they didn’t make a detailed plan
C. they have no time to do exercise in gym
D. they can’t afford diet food and to exercise in gym
2.The author doesn’t like quick food mainly because _____.
A. it contains too much fat
B. it makes people eat more
C. it has low fiber
D. it takes longer to digest
3.The underlined word “palatable” in Paragraph 4 means _____.
A. fresh B. delicious
C. healthy D. poor
4.The author suggests in the text that people should _____.
A. control the amount of food
B. eat more processed foods
C. cook food for themselves
D. choose cheap ingredients

Dear Diary,
Here I am in the middle of a city, 350 miles far away from our farmhouse. Do you want to know why we move last week? Dad lost his job, and as Mom explained, “He is lucky to find other one.” His new job meant I had to say goodbye to my classmate, my school and just everything else I love in the world. To make things bad, now I have to share a room to my younger sister, Maggie. Tomorrow is first day of school. I am very tiring, but I know I’ll never fall asleep.
Good night or remember, you, dear diary, is my only souvenir of my past life and my only friend. Yours
Rosemary
