To me, life without music would not be exciting. I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, or listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone’s life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings, the moving plot(情節(jié))and the greatest interests, be as exciting or dramatic(戲劇性)?I’m not sure about it.

Now, we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning—the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely, we discover them in  our everyday life too—in the rhythm(旋律)of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone, in some way or other. And, of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.

It is well said, “Through music a child enters a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”

1.  What does the writer say more about in the passage?

A. Life full of music.

2From the text, we know that many people     .

A. don’t realize the importance of music

B. get along quite well without music

C. go to the concert instead of enjoying films

D. think music would be less exciting than films

3In the writer’s opinion, if there was no music in films or TV plays,      .

A. the cinema and theatre would be quiet

B. we would lose some of the audience

C. everything would be as exciting as before

D. it would be hard to imagine the result

4What does the underlined word “melody” mean in the text?

A. Flying                  B. Looking

C. Singing D. Living

To all of you at Chinese love links,

I am 44 years old and never married.I have always wanted to find that perfect someone that I dream about. For about the last five years I have almost given up the hope of ever finding the one I truly wish to spend the rest of my life with.

I have always tried to be a nice guy.I had found your website some four or five months before.I did not know what to expect.I don't know how to speak Chinese and never thought truly of how I was to an Asian woman.

Well, I had a lot of replies from some very nice and pretty women.I had a hard time finding only a couple to write to.But one stood out from the rest. She was cute, nice and seemed to hold a lot of the same values as I do.In a short time I had decided to write only to her.We communicated via e-mail 2~3 times a day and phone calls once or twice a week.

I went and met her and her family only a week ago.Her name is Ying and she lives in Nanning.I found Nanning to be one of the most beautiful cities I had ever been to.We had even decided to marry and I wanted to bring her to the USA under the fianc-e visa. Not only did she meet everything I had ever hoped to find in someone else but turned out to be what every woman should be like, at least the ones I have met.We plan to marry as soon as she is here and start a family together as neither of us has children but we both want them.

So to anyone out there reading this, I can only say this:You may not find what you are looking for if you're not honest with your partner and yourself. This site worked for me mostly because I was honest with something that I wanted in someone else. When I did find her, love can work even across the other side of the world, between language differences and cultural differences.I wish you all luck in finding your perfect match.I have finally found mine and wish to give all my thanks to those at Chinese love links to help make it happen.

Sincerely yours,

Arthur

Make me laugh, now!

In a room filled with cigarette smoke and the smell of beer, people are laughing as a little man on stage talks. This is stand-up, a major form of live entertainment in the West.

It could be held in a theatre or just a bar.The basic idea is that a person, or sometimes two, "stands up" on a stage and makes the audience laugh.

The performer could tell a story or lots of little stories. He could just tell jokes or discuss the most serious issues of the day.The point is that the audience expects to be made to laugh.

Audiences at stand-up shows are not polite. If they don't find the person funny they will shout out. These people are called "hecklers"(詰難者).If a comedian

Different stand-up comedians have different styles. Some are called straight men. These will never laugh or smile and will try to appear very serious even though what they are talking about is very funny.Others play the fool. These act and say things that are very stupid so that you can't help laughing at them.Another type is

Count Me Out

Call me old-fashioned.Call me old.Call me what you want, but I refuse to become part of this new Internet world.

I do not possess a computer at home or at the office.Actually, I stopped going to an office 35 years ago, when all communications were done with a pen, a typewriter, or, if the matter was of world-shaking importance, over the telephone.Likewise, if you like something advertised in a newspaper or magazine, you visited the shop selling it at the given address, or you phoned the number shown. Then you spoke to the fellow and asked for further details.

Tell me what you think of the following ad that appeared the other day in the newspaper. It was for a cure for cancer and this is what it said:“Awareness is the key.Visit spfulford.com at the awareness site.” There was no address or telephone number for the site.So what do unfortunate people without a computer do if they are seeking a cure for their illness?

There are, I am told, certain advantages in having access to the Internet. You can, for example, send love messages across the world or even get married to someone that you meet online. This bit doesn’t interest me; I have been happily married for 60 years. There are, of course, other activities for Internet users besides finding love. They can pay bills, order groceries, or discuss with their doctors.

And this is by no means all.More amazing things are yet to come in the near future.I read a newspaper report recently that quoted Stephen Hawking, an important British scientist.“The complexity of a computer as it exists today is probably less than the brain of an earthworm,” he said.“But, as technology advances, computers will become more complex, and a time may come when the Internet may develop ‘consciousness.’ In other words, the Internet will be able to think, have feelings, and may well be able to act on its own.”

If Professor Hawking is right, I may change my attitude to computers. As I grow older each day, I would like one of those that not only thinks for me but also accepts responsibilities for all my mistakes.

(1)

What’s the meaning of the title “Count Me Out”?

[ ]

A.

Get me out of the Internet world.

B.

Computers are trying to take control of life.

C.

Modern technology pushes old people away.

D.

Do not expect me to be a supporter of the Internet.

(2)

According to Paragraph 2, the author thinks computers are _________

[ ]

A.

unnecessary

B.

convenient

C.

expensive

D.

advanced

(3)

What might the author like about the future computer?

[ ]

A.

Taking blames.

B.

Curing illnesses.

C.

Delivering messages.

D.

Responding to emotions.
