Have you wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colours? Colours in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Birds, especially seagulls(海鷗) are very fond of locusts(蝗蟲), but birds can’t easily catch locusts because locusts change their colours together with the change of the colour of crops(莊稼). When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe(成熟的), locusts take on exactly the same brown colour as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves, bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the colour much like the barks(樹皮) of trees.
An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid is over, its enemies cannot find it, and it quickly swims away. Thus,it has existed(存活)up to now though it is not powerful at all.

A long time ago there lived a poor slave whose name was Aesop. His face was white, but very homely. When Aesop was about twenty nine years old his master lost a great deal of money and was determined to sell his slaves. To do this, he had to take them to a large city where there was a slave market.
The city was far away, and the slaves must walk the whole distance. A number of bundles(成捆的東西) were made up for them to carry. Some of these bundles contained the things they would need on the road. "Choose your bundles, boys," said the master. "There is one for each of you." Aesop at once chose the largest one. The other slaves laughed and said he was foolish. But he threw it upon his shoulders and seemed well satisfied. The next day, the laugh was the other way. For the bundle which he had chosen had contained the food for the whole party.
"Aesop is a wise fellow," said his master. "The man who buys him must pay a high price.” A very rich man, whose name was Xanthus, wanted a servant. As the slaves stood before him he asked each one to tell what kind of work he could do. All were eager to be bought by Xanthus because they knew he would be a kind master. So each one boosted of his skill in doing some sort of labor. One was a fine gardener; another could take care of horses; a third was a good cook; a fourth could manage a household. "And what can you do, Aesop?" asked Xanthus. "Nothing," he answered. "Nothing? How is that?" "Because, since these other slaves do everything, there is nothing left for me to perform," said Aesop.
This answer pleased the rich man so well that he bought Aesop at once, and took him to his home on the island of Samos. In Samos the little slave soon became known for his wisdom and courage. Seated in a convertible (敞篷車) with the top down at 60 miles an hour, Mary looked at the flies that sat on top of Mark’s hair. How could they stay there? She wondered.
Mary had not seen Mark in years, until the other day when he came into the café where she worked. His appearance was different from when he was in high school. Now, he was a bit fat and thick glasses covered his eyes. However, that didn’t change Mary’s feelings for him at all. He had just bought a brand new red sports car and asked her if she would like to go for a ride and then have dinner with him. Her heart beat with excitement as he opened the door for her. She noticed something very strange as Mark got into the car and started to drive away. On the hair was a group of flies just sitting there.
Mary stared in amazement. It seemed the faster they drove, the more determined the flies were to stick to his hair.
Mary remained silent. She leaned forward and turned the radio on, to try to divert her attention away from the flies, but she couldn’t help thinking about them. She looked up at Mark, who was completely devoted to what was going on and continued to sing to the music while driving merrily along.
Finally, Mark pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road beside a diner and looked in the mirror and said, “Mary, I would like to comb my hair before we get something to eat. Could you reach under the seat and give me my hair cream?”
Mary reached under the seat and pulled out a camping backpack, which contained a round jar and started to laugh wildly as she pointed to the label (商標(biāo)).
“That’s not hair cream on your hair, Mark! It says it’s Fly Trap Glue!”
1.What can we learn from the text?
A. Mark had bought a new sports car for Mary.
B. Mark used to be a thin, handsome boy.
C. Mark and Mary had been in love for years.
D. Mary felt strange when she saw the red car.
2.What does the underlined word “divert” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Replace. B. Absorb. C. Take. D. Recover.
3.Why did Mary burst into laughter?
A. Because Mary played a trick on Mark.
B. Because their ride wasn’t well prepared.
C. Because Mark had prepared a jar of hair cream for her.
D. Because Mark had mistaken Fly Trap Glue for hair cream.
4.What can be the best title for this passage?
A. Stuck on you. B. Unchanged love.
C. A hair trick. D. A wonderful ride.

It’s normal to wake briefly during the night. 1. But if you’re waking up during the night and having trouble falling back asleep, the following tips may help.
Stay out of your head. The key to getting back to sleep is continuing to prepare your body for sleep, so remain in bed in a relaxed position. Hard as it may be, try not to stress over the fact that you’re awake, because that very stress and anxiety encourage your body to stay awake. 2.
3. If you are finding it hard to fall back asleep, try a relaxation technique such as visualization(想象), or deep breathing, which can be done without even getting out of bed. Remind yourself that although they’re not a replacement for sleep, rest and relaxation still help refresh your body.
Do a quiet, non-stimulating activity. If you’ve been awake for more than 15 minutes, try getting out of bed and doing a quiet, non-stimulating activity, such as reading a book. Keep the lights dim so as not to think that it’s time to wake up. 4. A light snack might relax you, but be careful not to eat so much that your body begins to expect a meal at that of the day.
5. If you wake during the night feeling anxious about something, make a brief note of it on paper and delay worrying about it until the next day when you are fresh and it will be easier to resolve.
A. Make relaxation your goal, not sleep.
B. Put off worries and troubles.
C. Use a flashlight to go to the bathroom at night.
D. In fact, a good sleeper won’t even remember it.
E(涂AB). Also avoid screens of any kind-computers, TVs, cell phones, iPads.
F (涂AC). You’ll be much more productive and creative after a good night’s rest.
G(涂AD). A good way to stay out of your head is to focus on the feeling in your body.
