A group of Mississippi hunters who shot and killed an alligator (短吻鱷) weighting 910 pounds on Sunday, were amazed when they discovered that the animal already bore injuries caused by musket (步槍)from the Civil War era. A total of 9 bullets was found, and the various tests and analysis have confirmed that they were indeed fired at the animal in the 19th Century.
Nine of the wounds on the animal are believed to have been caused by Enfield Pattern 1853 muskets. These old injuries were concentrated around the animals tail and hind legs, suggesting that the alligator could have possibly been used as a target for shooting practice by Confederate troops.
The huge animal also bore five other bullet wounds from three different calibers (口徑)of hunting guns, as well as many dents and scars, which shows that it survived many firearm injuries in the past. It did not however, survive the six 50-caliber bullets fired at him by the group of amateur hunters from Jackson, who were finally able to take it down.
The bullets were confirmed as true musket from between 1850 and 1870. This incredible animal brings a whole new view on this large animal native to the southeastern United States. American alligators have been known for years to live well over 50 years and were thought capable of possibly living as long as 70 or 80 years, but this one was estimated to have been 185 years old at the time of its death.
Others like turtles, have been known, to have lifespans of over 150 years, but it is the first of crocodile of such an old age ever found. The heaviest ever recorded, weighing in at an unbelievable 1,011.5 lbs, was pulled out of a river in Alabama in August of this yea.

Just what is a tiger mother? Amy Chua is a law professor at America’s Yale University and her recent book on the subject is making waves. She’s been called “dangerous”,“outrageous”,even a “monster” for her descriptions of how she brought up her two daughters.
Her book Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother describes fighting with a daughter for hours at the piano to ensure the child gets a piece of music right. She rejected birthday cards made for her by her girls because she didn’t think they had made enough effort. She compared one child negatively with the other, threatening to burn their toys. Her rules include: schoolwork always comes first; an A-minus is a bad grade; children must be two years ahead of their classmates in math, and playing the violin or the piano is a must. Ms. Chua considers the Chinese hard work ethic as a way of creating happy, successful children—at least in her case. Although she’s had a large amount of flak for her theories, one thing can’t be ignored—the success of Chinese children in the education system.
In Britain, shocking research shows that Chinese girls, for example, are outperforming all other foreign groups at GCSE—79 percent getting 5 A—C Grades, compared with 58 percent of white British girls. So what is it about Chinese parenting that’s leading to high achievers? And how do Amy Chua’s theories play into that success?
She told me that if her daughter came back from school with 96/100 in a test, Chua would ask her what happened to the other 4 points. It’s about always knowing “you can do better”,she told me. Interestingly, in China, the birthplace of the tiger mother, people are moving away from traditional Chinese parenting. They are following more western parenting styles.
1.What can we learn about Amy Chua according to Paragraph 2?
A.She is very strict with her children.
B.She doesn’t think her children are clever.
C.She is very interested in playing the piano.
D.She knows playing is important to children.
2.The underlined word “flak” in the third paragraph probably means“________”.
A.a(chǎn)ttentionB.criticismC.curiosityD.contribution
3.It can be inferred from the text that ________.
A.Amy Chua will change her methods
B.Amy Chua considers her methods useful
C.Amy Chua’s children don’t love their mother
D.Amy Chua’s children prefer western parenting styles

It is amazing to note that the Internet is still such a new device, and yet it is one of the fastest and most powerful media tools. But think about it for a moment. On the Internet, a big online company can be run by only two guys in their garage. So it is only reasonable then, that people shopping online would be a little leery of the security levels.
Internet giants such as Microsoft knew consumer confidence was the key to getting virtual shopping off the ground, and they work hard to make people feel safe to shop online.
Credit card companies, too, quickly saw the potential for online shopping, and have installed things like online shopping insurance for people. If you ever have a problem with your online credit purchases, many credit card companies will happily refund your money and then set their claws on the company that wronged you. Now that’s buying power!
There are other bonuses for online shoppers, of course. No line-ups, for one. No annoying mall shopping carts with broken wheels and kids crying because their parents won’t get them what they want.
When shopping online, consumers can sit down, have a coffee, and wear their slippers, not having to worry about their hair or parking, and just clicking through sale after sale. Comparison shopping couldn’t be any easier. And thanks to courier companies(快遞公司)getting in on the act, you never need to wait longer than a day or two to get those all important purchases delivered right to your door.
No wonder so many companies are shaking their heads at traditional advertising and instead looking to the “virtual” world to attract online shoppers.
1.The underlined word leery means _________.
A. distrustful B. confident
C. hopeful D. disappointed
2.Consumer confidence in online shopping mainly relies on _________.
A. shopping freedom B. shopping convenience
C. Internet access D. Shopping security
3.Which groups of words would the writer use to describe current online shopping?
A. Adventurous, enjoyable, fast, unreal
B. Unsafe, cheap, slow, convenient
C. Safe, convenient, fast, comfortable
D. Reliable, popular, convenient, slow
4.The following companies are thought to have made contributions to the popularity of online shopping EXCEPT ________.
A. Internet companies
B. advertising companies
C. courier companies
D. credit card companies
