There are two elements in life that Americans do save carefully: time and labor. Americans are“slaves to nothing but the clock”, it has been said. Time is treated as if it were an almost tangible(看得到的)entity. In their language, there are words associated with it: time can be budgeted(預(yù)算), saved, wasted, stolen, killed, and cut. Americans also charge for time. It is a precious commodity (product) to them. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person's hourglass, they cannot be matter of patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of them have what might be called “a short fuse”They begin to splutter(快速地說話)and move restlessly about if they feel time is slipping away without some return——be this in terms of pleasure, work value or rest.
Normally Americans do not assess (評定)their visitors in relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talk; much less do they take out for dinner, while they develop a pre-business sense of trust and rapport(和睦關(guān)系). Rapport to most of them is less important than performance. They seek out credentials(證明文件)of past performance rather than evaluating a business colleague through social manners. Since they generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, they start talking business very quickly.
Most Americans live in time segments(parts)by engagement calendars. These calendars may be divided into intervals as short as fifteen minutes. They often “give” a person two or three (or more) segments of their calendar, but in the business world they almost always have other appointments following “hard on the heels of” whatever they are doing. Time is therefore always ticking in their inner ear.

Farmers, as we all know, have been having a hard time of it lately, and have turned to new ways of earning income from their land. This involves not only planting new kinds of crops, but some 1 ways of making money, the most unusual of which has got to be sheep racing. Yes, you heard me 2 ! A farmer now holds sheep races on a regular basis, and during the past year over 100,000 people have 3 to watch the race. “I was passing the farm on my way to the sea for a holiday.” one punter (賽馬經(jīng)紀(jì)人) told me, “and I thought I'd have a look. I didn't believe it was serious, to tell you the truth.” According to a regular visitor, betting on sheep is more interesting than betting on horses. “At proper horse races everyone has already studied the form of the horse 4 , and there are clear favourites. 5 nobody has heard anything about these 6 ! Most people find it difficult to tell one from another in any case.” I stayed to watch the races, and I must admit that I found it quite 7 . In a usual sheep race, half a dozen sheep race down hill over a course of about half a mile. Food is waiting for them ar the other end of the 8 just to give them some encouragement, I ought to add! The sheep run surprisingly fast. 9 they have probably not eaten for a while. Anyway, the crowd around me were obviously enjoying their day out at the races. 10 by their happy faces and the sense of excitement.
