根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有兩項(xiàng)為多余選項(xiàng)。
1. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.
The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. 2..
The first and most basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War II these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. 3. It included such items as automobile sand new houses.
By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “l(fā)ife-enriching”level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “l(fā)uxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. 4.
On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?
A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. 5.In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.
A.Then a third level appeared.
B.Human wants seem endless.
C.When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears.
D.There are several levels of wants in one’s life.
E.At this stage, we now may seek to ensure the health, safety, and leisure.
F.Also included here are fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing.
G.Different people have different wants on each level.

If you like texting and are trying to lose weight, a new study found that using texting to track diet and exercise habits may help you lose weight.
Previous research has shown that keeping food and exercise diaries improves the likelihood of success when you are trying to lose weight. Using a computer or a pen and paper to record information, however, can be a burden and cause some people to give up.
Duke University researchers said using text messages to track eating and exercise habits can save time, and increase the chances that people will stick with their weight-loss rules.
The study included 26 obese women with an average age of 38. The women used daily texting as part of their weight-loss program. The text messages focused on tracking personalized goals, such as avoiding sugary drinks or walking 10,000 steps a day. Messages also provided brief feedback (回復(fù)) and tips.
Every morning, the women received a text from an automated system that said, “Please text yesterday’s personal information of steps you walked and how many sugary drinks you had.” Based on the women's responses to the text message, the system sent another text with personalized feedback and tips.
After six months, the women who used daily texting lost an average of nearly 3 pounds, while another group of women who used traditional methods to keep food and exercise diaries gained an average of 2.5 pounds, according to the study, which was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.
“Text messaging has become popular and may be an effective method to simplify tracking of diet and exercise behavior,” Dori Steinberg, who was responsible for this research, said.
Steinberg said, "Text messaging offers several advantages compared to other self-monitoring methods. Unlike web-based diet and exercise diaries, data in a text message can be entered quickly on nearly all cellphone platforms so it is very convenient to receive feedback. Besides, because of the limited number of words used in text messages, it saves time.”
1.According to the study, traditional methods _________.
A. are easier for people to lose weight
B. may cause people to give up losing weight
C. provide brief feedback and tips
D. are easy to track diet and exercise behavior
2.Which is NOT true about text messaging according to Steinberg?
A. It saves time.
B. It saves money.
C. It can be entered quickly.
D. It is easy to receive feedback.
3.What’s the best title for the text?
A. Texting helps keep healthy
B. Texting saves time and money
C. Texting can help you lose weight
D. Texting provides brief feedback and tips
4.What’s Dori Steinberg’s attitude towards text messaging?
A. Unknown. B. Negative.
C. Positive. D. Unconcerned.

One of the most popular and enduring myths about depression is that depressed people are sad all the time—and that by extension, people who are happy can’t be experiencing depression, even if they say they are. It is a mistaken version of depression. Depression doesn’t make you sad all the time.
When I’m having a depressive feeling, I’m not walking around in black clothes, and weeping. I go out with friends. I play jokes. I keep working, and have friendly chats with the people I work with. I read books. Above all, I experience moments of happiness. Yet I feel a strange conflicting pressure. On the one hand, I feel like I need to engage in a sort of sadness for people to understand that I really am depressed and that each day is a struggle for me. Because that way I will appear suitably sad, and thus, depressed—and then maybe people will recognize that I’m depressed and perhaps they’ll even offer support and assistance.
On the other hand, I feel an extreme pressure to perform just the opposite, because sad depressed people are boring and no fun, as I am continually reminded every time I speak openly about depression or express feelings of sadness and frustration. I’m caught in a trap where if I don’t perform sadness, I’m not really depressed, but if I express sadness at all to any degree, I’m annoying and boring and should stop being so self-centered. Depression can become your master, but you can slip out from under it occasionally. And many depressed people don’t actually spend it fainting dramatically on the couch and talking about how miserable they are.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Sad people are always depressed.
B. Depressed people are sad all the time.
C. Happy people will never feel depressed.
D. Depressed people do not always feel sad.
2.When feeling depressed, the writer usually avoids ________.
A. expressing sad feelings straight
B. going out with friends and relatives
C. having friendly chats with colleagues
D. experiencing moments of happiness
3.What’s the writer’s attitude to being sad and depressed?
A. Positive.B. Negative.C. Indifferent.D. Cold.
4.In the passage, the writer advises depressed people to ________.
A. speak openly about depression
B. hide the depression in the heart and never express it
C. be optimistic and become the master of depression
D. lie on the couch and talk about how depressed they are
