Strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. For three days water in the village wells rose and fell, rose and fell. Farmers noticed that the well walls had deep cracks in it. A smelly gas comes out of the cracks. In the farmyards, the chickens and even the pigs were so nervous to eat. Mice ran out of the fields looking for place to hide. Fish jumped out of their bowls and ponds. At about 3:00 am in July 28, 1976, some people saw bright lights in the sky. The sound of planes could be heard of outside the city of Tangshan even when no planes were in the sky. In the city, the water pipes in some buildings cracked and bursting. But the one million people of the city, that thought little of these events, were asleep as usually that night.

Albert Hofmann was a Swiss Scientist who was fascinated by nature. This led him to a career in chemistry in which he sought answers to his uncertainties. He worked at Sandoz Laboratories where he nurtured his research work, and there he made a lot of success by working with various plants and changing them into something useful. He became famous when he became the first person to produce lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) (迷幻藥). In addition, he was also the first person to taste it and learn about its hallucinogenic (勾起幻覺的) effects. He was deeply connected to the nature and argued that LSD, besides being useful for psychiatry(精神病學), could also be used to promote awareness of mankind’s place in nature. However, he was disappointed that his discovery was being carelessly used as a drug for entertainment. Because of his discovery, LSD fans have fondly called him “The father of LSD”. Besides carrying out his scientific experiments, he also authored numerous books and more than 100 scientific articles. In 2007, he featured in a list of the 100 greatest living geniuses(天才), published by The Telegraph Newspaper.

Childhood & Early Life

Albert Hofmann was born in Baden, Switzerland, on January 11, 1906. He was the eldest of four children. His father was a poor toolmaker in a factory and they lived in a rented apartment. He spent much of his childhood outdoors, and grew up with a very deep connection with nature.

He had mind-blowing experiences in childhood, wherein nature was changed in magical ways that he didn’t understand. These experiences caused questions in his mind, and chemistry was the scientific field which allowed him to understand them.

Traditionally, across the world, boys and girls attend a mixed school, where they study together. But boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions (情感) and encourage them to take part in activities such as art, dance and music.

Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to take part in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to correspond to(和…相符) the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man".

The findings of the study go against accepted wisdom that boys do better when taught together with girls.

Tony Little, head master of Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls.

The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when girls do better earlier in speaking and reading skills.

But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor (量身定做) lessons to boys' learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia.

Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision, learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around. "Boys in mixed schools view classical music as feminine(女性的) and prefer the modern genre (類型) in which violence and sexism are major themes," James wrote.

Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel that they had to be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools, boys feel forced to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported.

1.The author believes that a single-sex school would __________.

A. force boys to hide their emotions to be "real men"

B. help boys to be more competitive in schools.

C. encourage boys to express their emotions more freely

D. naturally strengthen boys’ traditional image of a man

2.It is commonly believed that in a mixed school boys __________.

A. behave more responsibly.

B. grow up more healthily.

C. perform relatively better.

D. receive a better education.

3.According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is __________.

A. teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys

B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted

C. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in

D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit

4.What does the underlined word “acute” in paragraph 8 mean?

A. lovely B. sharp C. serious D. dull

Hetty Robinson learnt all about money when very young. As a child, she read the financial (金融的) pages of the newspaper to her rich father. Her father died when Hetty was 30, and she inherited $1 million. When she herself died in 1916, she left almost $100 million to her two children.

Hetty made her money on the New York stock (股票) exchange. She was a financial genius. She made money so easily that people called her the Witch of Wall Street.
