A small town in southwest Britain is banning (禁止) plastic bags in an attempt to help the environment
and cut waste-a step that environmentalists believe is a first for Europe.
Shopkeepers in Modbury population 1,500, agreed to stop handing out disposable plastic bags to
customers on Saturday. They said paper sacks and cloth carrier bags would be offered instead.
Last month, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban plastic grocery bags. Internationally, laws
to discourage the use of plastic bags have been passed in parts of South Africa and Ireland, where
governments either tax shoppers who use them or fine companies that hand them out. Bangladesh already bans them, and so do at least 30 remote Alaskan villages.
Modbury, about 225 miles southwest of London, has also declared a bag ammesty (寬限期), allowing local people to hand in plastic bags that have piled up at home. They will be sent for a recycling.
The Modbury ban was the idea of Rebecca Hosking, who saw the effect of bags on marine life while
working in the Pacific as a wildlife camerawoman. She said response in the town so far had been "really
positive".
"Modbury is quite an old-fashioned town and a lot of people have wicker(柳條) baskets to go out
shopping anyway, "Hosking told Sky News Television.
The World Watch Institute, an environmental research agency, states that 100 billion plastic bags are
thrown away each year in the United States alone. More than 500 billion are used yearly around the
world.

A poor traveller stopped under the tree to eat the boiled rice and vegetables which he had brought with him. A few metres away , there was a small shop by the side of the road where a woman was frying (油炸) fish and selling it to travellers. The woman watched the poor traveller carefully, and when he finished his food and began to go, she shouted rudely, “You haven't paid me for the fried fish!”

“But I have not had any fried fish!” he said.

“But everyone can see that you enjoyed the smell of my fried fish with your rice and vegetables ,” said the woman , “If you had not smelled the fish , your meal would not have been so pleasant!”

Soon a crowd collected, and although they supported the poor traveller, they had to admit that wind was blowing from the shop to the place where he had eaten, and that it had carried the smell of the fried fish to him.

Finally, the woman took the poor traveller to a judge , who said , “The woman says that the traveller ate his meal with the smell of her fried fish.   A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension (理解), will help you in other subjects as well as in English, and the general principle (原則) apply to any language. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook—but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage (百分比) gained will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned (有關(guān)的) with.

The reading passages which follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about five hundred words long. They are about topics of general interest which do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. If you read this kind of English, with understanding at four hundred words per minute, you night skim (瀏覽) through a newspaper at perhaps 650-700, while with difficult textbooks you might drop to two hundred or two hundred and fifty.

Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved. Tests in Minnesota, U.S.A., for example, have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example, Tolstoy’s War and Peace in translation, at speeds of between 240 and 250 words per minute with about seventy percent comprehension. Students in Minnesota claim (自稱) that after twelve half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around five hundred words per minute.

1According to the passage, the purpose of effective reading with higher speed is most likely to help you     .

A. only in your reading of physics textbook

B. improve your understanding of an economics textbook

C. not only in your language study but also in other subjects

D. choose the suitable material to read

2Which of the following does not describe the types of reading materials mentioned in the second paragraph?

A. Those beyond (超越) one’s reading comprehension.

B. Those concerned with common knowledge.

C. Those without the demand for specialized knowledge.

D. Those with the length of about five hundred words

3The average speed of untrained native speakers in the University of Minnesota is     .

A. about three hundred words per minute

B. about two hundred and forty-five words per minute

C. about sixty words per minute

D. about five hundred words per minute

4According to the passage, how fast can you expect to read after you have attended twelve half-hour lessons in the University of Minnesota?

A. You can increase your reading speed by three times.

B. No real increase in reading speed can be achieved.

C. You can increase your reading speed by four times.

D. You can double your reading speed.

5Where do you think the passage is taken from?

A. The introduction to a book on fast reading.

B. A local newspaper for young people.

C. A school newspaper run by students.

D. The introduction to an English textbook.

A Giant Leap for China

A few days ago, he was just Colonel(上校)Yang; few people knew his name or recognized his face. But last Thursday, when he came back to the earth after a 21-hour trip to space, Yang Liwei’s smile was seen across the world above the magic words:“China’s first spaceman”.

The 38-year-old astronaut was sent into space at 9 a. m.Last Wednesday by China’s Shenzhou Ⅴ spacecraft, which orbited the earth 14 times. He landed safely at 6∶23 a. m.The next day, making China the third country successfully send a person into space, after the former Soviet Union and the US.

Yang was satisfied with his job.“I have seen many landing scenes before on video, and I think ours was one of the most successful, ”He said on a special plane to Beijing after landing.Born into an ordinary family in Liaoning Province, he became a pilot in the Chinese Air Force in 1987, spending 1350 hours in the air.He joined the Chinese space programme 11 years later.

While in space, Yang recorded everything he saw as well as showing China’s national flag and the United Nations’ flag to the people watching on TV at home.He also ate a meal of diced chicken and fried rice, before taking a 3-hour nap.The whole project went according to plan, but space exploration is not as easy as it seems.

Anyone who saw the destruction of the US space shuttle Columbia in February this year will know that Yang took a great risk.

He experienced extremely high temperatures, while the gravitation(重力)on take-off and landing were strong enough to force tears from his eyes.

He has spent five years training to become a spaceman.

“I eat all of my meals at the space programme’s dinning room and have never been able to take my son to kindergarten, ”he said.“I’ve never met his teachers.”

But becoming China’s first spaceman has made all the effort worthwhile.

“When I boarded the spacecraft for the first time, I couldn’t help feeling excited,” he said.“I decided that I had to fly it.”

To Chinese people, Yang is now a hero. One visitor to a Xinhua news agency online forum(網(wǎng)上論壇)said, “Yang’s trip is a giant leap forward for China.”

Officials say the next Shenzhou will be launched by 2005.China also plans to develop spacewalking and a space lab.

When some plates of the earth move suddenly, an earthquake happens. Many earthquakes begin under the sea. In fact, earthquakes may happen anywhere on the earth. They often happen near mountains.

During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even crack(斷裂)open. Houses fall, people are killed or hurt, and sometimes the whole villages or cities are destroyed.

Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and made maps that show“earthquake belts(帶)”. In these belts, it’s possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we can build strong houses to fight against earthquakes.

In the future, scientists will be able to predict exactly(精確預(yù)報(bào))when and where an earthquake will happen. They can also tell people what to do and how to do it.
