Learning experiences happen to us throughout our lives. Not long ago, I had one that I would like to __16__.
I was going to Marblehead with my sailboat team. The team was racing down the highway at 85 mph __17_ we realized we were __18_. Luckily, we saw a rest area ahead. I had a brand-new $20 bill. I was so __19_ because I had never had that kind of cash before. But spending it on __20__ seemed like throwing it away. We all rushed into the pizza line. __21__ I got a pizza and a drink, and walked to my table. About halfway through the meal, I __22_ I had not actually handed any money to the cashier. I had just __23__ out, and nobody had noticed. I felt terrible.
My conscience (良心) opened its mouth and swallowed me in one big bite. I couldn’t __24__ over it. I just couldn’t go back to the cashier and __25__ for my stolen pizza. I was so upset that I __26__ to give myself the pleasure of an ice cream for __27__ that someone would say, “Hey, Jeff, why not you use the change __28__ the pizza instead of that nice, new $20 bill?” I was not so __29__ of my cash now. For the next two years, whenever I was __30__ of the “pizza incident”, I would say to myself, “Don’t think about it…”
I have learned two things from this __31__. Maybe I was a fool for __32__ in to my conscience, and being too stupid to appreciate a __33__ pizza. But the real lesson is that even if you get away with what you have done, your conscience will __34__ up with you.
This reflects the saying, “Coward (懦夫) dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies one.” I was a coward and have felt terrible about that incident at least a thousand times. If I had been a “__35__” and gone back to pay for the pizza, I would have felt a little uncomfortable about it only one, or maybe twice.

My grandfather worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some crates(木箱)for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage(孤兒院)in Brazil. On his way home, he found his glasses were gone. When he mentally replayed his earlier actions, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket and fallen into one of the crates. His new glasses were heading for Brazil!
The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.
“It’s not fair,” he thought as he walked home angrily. “I’ve been very faithful in giving my time and money to my work, and now this.”
Several months later, the director of the orphanage came to the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to my grandfather’s small church in Chicago.
He began by thanking the people for their kindness in supporting the orphanage. “But most of all, ” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year. You see, some people had just come to the orphanage, destroying everything, including my glasses. I was desperate. Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were very worried about this. Then your crates arrived. When I removed the covers, I found a pair of glasses lying on top.”
He paused long enough to let his words sink in. Then, he continued, “When I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”
The people listened, happy for the miraculous glasses. But they thought it was strange because there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.
Sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, my grandfather, an ordinary carpenter realized his glasses had found a good place to go.

One very cold day,a snowstorm blew into our area. Needing firewood,I quickly set out with my best friend,Bruce,to look for a tree to cut down. I was glad to have Bruce along with. Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. So it was important to have a friend who could warn me of danger.
When I chose a big tree about 23 meters tall and prepared to cut it down,my best friend suddenly warned me,“Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!﹙電線﹚”I wasn’t sure about it. So I decided to disregard his warning. I wanted to finish the job quickly and go home. So I began cutting down the tree. When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt that my friend was right.
The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground. I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood,so I could safely remove the tree. As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head. I was shocked!
After I returned home and told my mother what had happened, she quickly called the power company. The workers from the power company soon arrived on the scene. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had,his face turned pale.
“You should have been killed,” he said.
So why am I still alive? It was my boots that saved my life.
Within two hours, the workers removed the tree. Soon the snowstorm calmed down—but not my mother.
Even though she was glad I wasn’t hurt,my mother was still serious. After all,I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.
Through this experience,I learn it’s important to listen to people who offer a different perspective. Taking time to listen might actually save a lot of time and trouble. It certainly would have kept me from getting the “shock” of my life.
