When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and puts out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can’t be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.

Certainly, most of the world’s great religions(宗教)order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally(道德方面) right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.

First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil(惡行). Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence.

Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.

It is hard to come to any final conclusion;there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness (道德之善) of the giver.

1.What is mainly discussed in the passage?

A. Moral deeds of people.

B. Religious activities of the church.

C. Moral goodness of the giver.

D. Arguments on giving to beggars.

2.What can we infer from the sentence “But has the world changed?” in the second paragraph?

A. People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village.

B. Some people will not do what was morally right in the past.

C. We don’t meet with those who need help any more.

D. Now it is the government’s duty to help the beggars.

3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Some people dress up to pretend to be beggars.

B. Some beggars use the money to buy drugs.

C. Some beggars want money to help their children go to school.

D. Some beggars have no excuse for begging.

4.In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because ________.

A. the cases can be so different

B. there are so many beggars

C. there is so much money wasted

D. there are so many different arguments

From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life. It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction.

With a good book in our hands we never feel lonely. Whether the characters described are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. In the pages of books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold dear or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances(熟人). Our human friends sometimes may bore us, but the friends we make in books never weary us with their company. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings. When human friends leave us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement. One of the most valuable gifts given by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can.

To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner or stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire. Through books we may get the thrill of dangerous adventure without danger. We can climb lofty mountains, brave the dangers of an Antarctic winter, or cross the scorching(赤日炎炎) sands of the desert, all without hardship. In books we may visit the studios of Hollywood; we may join the picturesque peasants in an Alpine village or the kindly natives on a South Sea island. Indeed, through books the whole world is ours for the asking. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited. The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architecture, the marvels (令人驚嘆)of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.

1.Why is it that we sometimes forget our surroundings and even our identity while reading?

A. No one has come to disturb you.

B. Everything is so quiet and calm around you.

C. The book you are reading is so interesting and attractive.

D. Your book is overdue; you are finishing it at a very fast speed.

2.The word “weary” means ________.

A. to attract someone’s attention

B. to distract someone’s attention

C. to make someone very bored

D. to make someone interested

3.Which one of the following statements is true?

A. Your wish to visit some far-off place can be realized through the pages of the books.

B. To escape from the dull realities of everyday life, you should take up reading.

C. Books can always help you to live a colorful life.

D. You may obtain valuable experience from reading good books.

You may complain that there are too many tests on the way to college entrance, but an increasing number of students want to take one more. That is the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, an American test for students who intend to apply for college admission.

Chen Huanlu, aged 18, from Shandong Province took part in the SAT subject tests (SAT 2) in Hong Kong on June 2. She has also been scheduled to take the SAT reasoning test (SAT 1) in October.

“I hope to study environmental engineering at an American university, where I may have more opportunities to get cutting-edge (前沿的) knowledge in this area,” said Chen.

However, not all SAT test takers want to apply to American universities.

“I wanted to see how I would do when faced with plenty of stress and also to evaluate (測(cè)評(píng)) my scholastic level by an American standard. The SATs made my school life more diverse,” said Senior 2 student Zhou Yuxiang from Sichuan Province.

Zhou, aged 17, a top student in his school, was inspired by some of his friends. They have taken this test and been admitted to American universities, including Harvard and Yale. Last winter vacation he took a 20-day SAT course at Chengdu New Oriental School.

“As I prepared for the test in the following months, I was forced to balance my everyday schedule better. Fortunately I was optimistic enough to have undergone the most difficult time,” he said.

In May and June, Zhou flew alone to Hong Kong to sit for the SAT1 and SAT2.

“They are both the standards which have been set for us to reach. What we should do more sensibly is to try harder to prepare for them. Survival of the fittest (適者生存) is true both in America and in China. That is something I have learnt beyond the SAT itself,” he said.

1. The SAT is a test designed mainly for _________.

A. Chinese students who want to go to college in America

B. American students who intend to apply for college admission in China

C. students who plan to apply for American universities

D. students who want to learn about the survival of the fittest

A. She doesn’t like the college entrance examination in China.

B. She has taken part in both SAT 1 and SAT 2 in June.

C. She is interested in environmental issues.

D. She wants to get cutting-edge knowledge from SATs.

3. By taking Zhou Yuxiang for example, the author wants to tell us that ________.

A. all the students who take SATs intend to apply to American universities

B. some SAT takers simply regard the SAT as a challenge

C. he just takes the test for fun

D. SAT 1 and SAT 2 have something in common

4. What do Chen Huanlu and Zhou Yuxiang have in common?

A. They both took part in the SAT subject tests in Hong Kong.

B. They are both students of Senior 2.

C. Both of them attended a SAT course at New Oriental School.
