According to sociologists(社會學(xué)家),every modern industrial society has some form of social stratification(階層).Class, power and status are important in deciding people’s rank in society.
Class means a person’s economic position in society.A commonly used classification is lower class, middle class and upper class. While sociologists disagree on how these terms should be exactly defined, they do describe societies like the United States quite well. One study shows that 53% of Americans belong to the lower class,46% the middle class, and 1% the upper class.Interestingly,a surgeon earning $500,000 a year and a bus driver earning $50,000 a year both regard themselves as the middle class!
Power refers to the amount of control a person has over other people.Obviously, people in positions of great power (such as governors) exercise(行使)big power, but people who take orders from others have less power.Power and class do not always go hand in hand, however. For example, the governor of a state has great power, but he or she may not belong to a corresponding (相應(yīng)的)economic class.Generally, however, there is a relationship between power and class. To our knowledge, there aren’t too many people who aren’t millionaires in the U.S.Senate!
Status is the honor or respect attached to a person’s position in society. It can also be affected by power and class, but not necessarily so.For example,a university professor may have a high status but not belong to a high social class or have a lot of power over others.

YOUR mom might cook a bowl of noodles for you on your birthday. But in the US, a mom makes a cupcake for her children on their birthday.
Cupcakes are small, round cakes topped with frosting (糖霜). It has been an American tradition that moms bring cupcakes to the classroom to celebrate their child’s birthday.
But recently some doctors have called for this to be banned. They believe cupcakes contribute to child obesity.
Despite their good intentions, however, some people believe that experts are interfering (妨礙) with American culture. The cupcake is seen as American as apple pie — only prettier.
According to Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University, the cupcake is the most democratic (民主的) of desserts. As they are small enough for one person, you don’t have to share your cupcake with anyone — it’s all yours. They are also all the same size, so there can’t be any cries of “she got the bigger piece!”
Each bite can taste different depending on how much icing you have. It is a lesson in self-determination. Some people eat only a little of the frosting every time, others have it all in just one bite.
In recent years, eating a cupcake has become as trendy as having a cup of Starbucks coffee.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton jokingly promised on a talk show that if she was elected president, she would give everyone a cupcake on her birthday.
Ruth Reichl, editor-in-chief of Gourmet magazine, explains that the rise of the cupcake is very much about going back to American national identity in food, which is all about comfort. “People want to think about when they and their country were innocent,” she said.

In the winter months the temperature in most of Canada usually stays below 0℃. However, in some parts of Canada, such as southern British Columbia, the temperature rarely goes below 0℃. In most areas where people live, snow will be on the ground from mid-December to the middle of March. Though Canada’s winter may be much colder and longer than you are used to, it can be very enjoyable. For many Canadians, being active in winter is an important part of enjoying life. There are many outdoor winter activities, including skiing, ice fishing, walking, and skating. Joining in one of these activities may help you appreciate winter and enjoy your time outside in the snow.
Dressing for winter.
During winter in Canada, you will need warm clothing. If possible, arrive with these items or be prepared to buy them soon after your arrival. You will need:
*A warm waterproof(防水) boots.
*A scarf(圍巾) for your neck.
*A hat that covers your ears.
*Gloves for your hands.
*Thick winter coats, pants(褲子) and sweaters.

The influence of America is increasing in my country. Spanish people drink Coca Cola, wear blue jeans, watch Hollywood movies, listen to American music, and eat fast food, and they do these things every day.
I think that American movies are a good way to spread American culture because people are often influenced by what they see in the movies. Most of the programs and documentaries (紀(jì)錄片) we watch on TV are from America, and most of the movies we go to see are made in Hollywood.
In the last few years, the government has tried to protect the Spanish movies. Now, in our cinemas, at least twenty percent of the movies which are shown must be from Spain or from other countries in Europe.
American culture is a part of Spanish life now. It’s certain that many things from America are as much a part of people’s lives as Spanish things. For example, Coca Cola is as familiar to everybody as any typical Spanish product. I’ve known about Coca Cola for my whole life.
However, it’s different with Western fast food. For example, I don’t think McDonald’s is as successful in Spain as it is in other countries. In my opinion, one of the reasons may be the lifestyle of the Spanish people. The Spanish people normally eat at home.
On the other hand, maybe McDonald’s hamburgers will eventually replace the famous Spanish tapas. It’s true that in every city in Spain you can find a McDonald’s, and it is more popular among the Spanish children than among the adults. In any case, it’s obvious that American culture is becoming more and more a part of our lives every day.
【小題1】From the first paragraph we can know that ____.
A.the influence of America on Spain can be found everywhere |
B.most Spanish people don’t like to listen to their own music |
C.fast food spreads from Spain to the United States |
D.some Spanish actors go to America to improve their acting skills |
A.American novels. | B.Hollywood movies. |
C.McDonald’s. | D.American music. |
A.To protect foreign culture in Spain. |
B.To earn more money from Spanish films. |
C.To limit the number of foreign movies. |
D.To unite the European Community. |
A.The name of a drink. | B.The name of a restaurant. |
C.A clothing brand. | D.A certain kind of food. |

Grant Wood’s American Gothic caused a stir (轟動)in 1930 when it was exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago and awarded a prize of 300 dollars. Newspapers across the country carried the story, and the painting of a farmer and a younger woman posed before a white house brought the artist instant fame.
In 1930, Grant Wood, an American painter with European training, noticed a small white house built in the small southern Iowa town of Eldon. Wood was so fascinated by it that he decided to paint the house along with the kind of people he thought should live in that house. In the painting, the farmer is modeled on his dentist. Dr. Byron McKeeby. His younger sister Nan served as a model for the woman (imagined to be the farmer’s wife or daughter). Wood wanted to give a description of the traditional roles of men and women as the man is holding a pitchfork symbolizing hard labor. Each element was painted separately; the models sat separately and never stood in front of the house. The Gothic style of the house inspired the painting’s title.
American Gothic remains one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. The painting has become part of American popular culture. Some believe that Wood used it to satirize(諷刺) the narrow-mindedness that has been said to characterize Midwestern culture. The painting may also be read as a praise of the moral virtue or rural America or even as a mixture of praise and satire. American Gothic is one of the few images to reach the status of cultural symbol, along with Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Like many languages spoken by people, Ayapaneco is dying. Only two people in the world still speak it, and they won't talk to each other.
Spoken in Mexico for centuries, Ayapaneco is one of 68 surviving languages in the mainly Spanish-speaking nation. The two speakers are Manuel Segovia and Isidro Velazquez. Though they live only 500 meters from each other in the village, the two men seldom talk to each other. Daniel, an American expert, who is working to make a dictionary of Ayapaneco, says the two men “don’t have a lot in common,” and that Segovia can be “active” while Velasquez tends to mind his own business and stay at home.
While Segovia still speaks to his wife and son in Ayapaneco, neither of them can manage more than a few words. Velasquez hardly speaks his native tongue any more. Daniel is working to preserve the language in dictionary form before its last surviving speakers pass away. According to Daniel, Ayapaneco and the other languages began dying out with the introduction of public Spanish education in the mid-20th century. For decades, local children weren’t allowed to speak anything else. Many people to cities, starting in the 1970s, also helped the dying out of native languages.
Ayapaneco is the name given to the language; Segovia and Velazquez call it “Nuumte Oote”, which means “true voice”. Neither man, however, speaks the same language. The dictionary will contain two versions(版本) of the language when it comes out later this year. Those behind the dictionary aren’t the only ones trying to save Ayapaneco. The National Language Institute plans to hold classes so that Segovia and Velasquez can pass on what they know to children.
It is thought that there are about 6,000 languages spoken on earth and that about half will disappear over the next 100 years. Let’s hope the “true voice” isn’t one of them.
【小題1】Segovia and Velasquez seldom talk to each other in Ayapaneco because they___________________.
A.both dislike the language |
B.don’t get along well with each other |
C.a(chǎn)re too busy to talk to each other |
D.don’t share the same interests |
A.a(chǎn), b | B.a(chǎn), c | C.b, d | D.b, c |
A.Write a dictionary of Ayapaneco. |
B.Let Ayapaneco be taught at school. |
C.Introduce a public Ayapaneco education. |
D.Ask villagers to speak Ayapaneco. |
A.a(chǎn)grees that it is natural that Ayapaneco should die out |
B.thinks Daniel’s effort to preserve Ayapaneco won’t work |
C.thinks highly of Ayapaneco and wants people to learn it |

Too Much Happiness was written by Alice Munro, winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature, one of our greatest contemporary writers of fiction and the owner of the Man Booker Price for Fiction. Her stories have appeared in The New Yorker,The Atlantic Monthly, and other publications, and her collections have been translated into thirteen languages.
The main character is Sophia Kovalevsky,a great Russian mathematician, writer and advocator擁護(hù)者)of women’s rights in the late nineteenth century. After visiting her lover Maxsim Kovalevsky in Riviera, she travels in Europe, ending up in Sweden, where she teaches at the only university in Europe willing to employ a female mathematician. The book writes about her journey from Riviera to Sweden.
The story tells the typical struggle of an intellectual(知識分子)woman to achieve success and happiness. However, when she is going to die,Sophia says“too much happiness”.I think it’s irony(諷*11的).As reading the story, she has too many mental problems·First,as a woman mathematician, she was born in a wrong time .She was married to Vladimir Kovalevsky without love, called“a white marriage”.She explained that“no a young Russian woman who was unmarried could leave the country.”She satisfied her marriage to seek her career.
Furthermore, when she sees a man look like Maxsim in the station, she says to herself,“of course,it would not be Maxsim, what could he be doing in Paris?”She doesn’t want to face the fact because she doesn’t want to lose her hope. She believes they will marry in spring. And in her letter to Julia she says:“it is to be happiness after all, happiness after all.Happiness.”She is cheating herself. In fact, the man does not want to marry her,and the happiness she expected doesn’t take place at all.
Finally, I conclude that the end must be a tragedy(悲。瓼rom the very first pages the atmosphere is gloomy黯淡的)and threatening.“One of us will die this year.”“Because we have gone walking in a graveyard(墓地)on the first day of the New Year.”Some pages further,“a black cat across their path”all reflect it will be a bad ending. Not because she had some problems with her lung, but because her life does not bring her happiness, and because of these disharmony things that happen in her life.

Zoos have been around for centuries — and they’ve changed a lot over the years. In the Middle Ages, wealthy people kept animals in their gardens. Public animal parks appeared in European cities in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Philadelphia Zoo, the first in the United States, opened in 1874.
Until a few decades (十年) ago, most zoos were organized by creatures — monkeys in one area, cats in another, birds somewhere else, just like museum collections. In recent years, zoos have instead begun grouping animals that would normally interact (互相作用) in the wild. Moreover, instead of closing animals behind bars, designers are creating landscapes like the environments in which these creatures would naturally be found. Nearby signs provide information about the animals and their habitats in parts of the world where they normally live.
The Denver Zoo’s new Predator Ridge exhibit, for example, aims to teach visitors about Africa. Eight acres of land provide homes for 14 animal species, including lions, porcupines, cranes, and wild dogs. Plants from the region grow alongside African-like landform. Ten-foot-tall mounds (土墩) give lions a place from which to survey their surroundings, just as they would do in the wild.
Landscape design makes visitors to the Denver Zoo’s Predator Ridge exhibit feel like they’re really in Africa.
Animals in Predator Ridge can’t actually be mixed with one another, for safety reasons. But hidden deep channels and other smart features allow visitors to see all the animals at once. Different species can see each other too.
【小題1】What is the passage mainly about?
A.Protection of zoo animals. |
B.Changes of zoos over the time. |
C.The safety problem of zoos. |
D.The living habits of zoo animals. |
A.protect the safety of visitors |
B.separate lions from other animals |
C.create a natural environment for lions |
D.offer visitors a better view of lions |
A.Africa | B.the Predator Ridge exhibit |
C.the Denver Zoo | D.the ten-foot-tall mounds |
A.the earliest zoos were probably rich people’s gardens |
B.the Philadelphia Zoo is the first zoo in the world |
C.the new Predator Ridge exhibit is held in Africa |
D.more animals will be kept in zoos in the future |

Homesick is a compound word made up of HOME and SICK. You know what each word means on its own, of course. But think about what the words mean when they are used together. Homesick means SICK FOR HOME.
Now think for a minute about SEASICK. If you change the word home in the definition(釋義)to the word sea, would the definition fit SEASICK? Seasick means SICK BY THE MOVEMENT ON THE SEA. When you are homesick ,the only place you want to be is at home. When you are seasick, the last place you want to be is at sea.
Have you ever heard of a person being heartsick? Heartsick doesn’t mean that something is wrong with a person’s heart. people are heartsick when they are hurt deep inside and when they feel as if their hearts are broken.
But, on the other hand, we have such compound words as handshake, handstand, and handbag. Perhaps you may write definitions for them.
