One of my main concerns when I am helping people achieve their goals 1.(be) how they measure success. I see individuals getting 2.(frustrate) as they struggle hard for success.
The main reason is that people allow their definition of success to be determined by someone or something else. We should look at 3. own skills to determine what is successful to us. We should look inwards to determine 4. it would mean for us to be successful in our own mind.
Evaluating a successful person needs 5.(look) at his pathway to success, his action and his 6.(determine). You must set your own course of action, 7. stay on your course. You alone must determine what success means to you. Do what you do to the best of your ability and the rest will take care of itself.
Here is the 8.(true). Being a success is doing your best, not being the best. Success is not something you become, but it is something you continue being.
When we get to that point, we will experience a lot more joy and a lot less depression. And that 9.(sound) good to us!
Remember the great quote from Napoleon Hill, “If you cannot do great things, do small things in 10. great way.”

科目:高中英語 來源:2017屆廣東五校協(xié)作體高三上期第一次聯(lián)考英語卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解
Two of the saddest words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment.
My father is famous in our family for saying, “Take the extra minute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like moving a cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something that required a little more work such as taping padding (襯墊) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.
I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’s equally important to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he’s 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.
I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” about something, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.
1.Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?
A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.
B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.
C. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.
D. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.
2.The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to ________.
A. keep her appointment with the eye doctor
B. meet her father who was already an old man
C. join in the holiday celebration of the company
D. finish her work before the deadline approached
3.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. avoidedB. lackedC. abandonedD. took
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Emotional Well-being
B. The Two Saddest Words
C. The Most Useful Rule
D. The Peace of Mind

My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.
As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden. I remember Dad pushing the tiller(耕作機) ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corn, and our favorite — red tomatoes.
As I grew into a teenager, I didn’t get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids were grown and had started families of their own, Dad turned to gardening like never before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden.
But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was dying was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of multicolored vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.
For the first few years after he died, I couldn’t even bear to look at anyone’s garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.
1.Why did the author like the garden when he was a child?
A. He enjoyed being in the garden with his father.
B. The garden was just freshly tilled by his father.
C. He loved what his father grew in the garden.
D. The garden was planted with colorful flowers.
2.When all the kids started their own families, the author’s father ________.
A. stopped his gardening
B. turned to other hobbies
C. devoted more to gardening
D. focused on planting tomatoes
3.What happened to the garden when the author’s father was seriously ill?
A. The author’s son took charge of the garden.
B. No plant grew in the garden at all.
C. The garden was almost deserted.
D. It brought the author a great harvest.
4.We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.
A. the author’s son played happily in the garden
B. the author’s son reminded him of his own childhood
C. the author’s son was very glad to help the author
D. the author’s son will continue gardening as well

Through history, children have played with toys and they help to prepare children for adult life. But the toys are changing all the time. As science and technology have changed the way adults live, the toys children play with have changed as well. Development in science and technology has had a big effect on the toys that children play with. Today trains and mobile phones are popular toys for young children, but there were no toys of this kind before real trains and mobile phones were invented. The materials that toys are made of have also changed. Today lots of toys are made of plastic. Plastic is a modern, man-made material that did not exist in the past. On the other hand, some other toys that you have might not be all that different from the ones children played with 1,000 years ago. Scientists have found some bone dice(骰子) in Aberdeen. In medieval(中世紀的) times dice were used for playing games as much as they are today.
A recent survey found that half of all the children aged from 4 to 6 have played video games, a quarter of them regularly. The increasing use of electronic toys troubles Dr Singer, a professor at Yale. “One thing we know is that kids in early years need to be in touch with the real world,” he said, “no matter how brilliant they are, they’re not going to learn to walk, to move or to talk to others unless their hands or feet have a direct role in such activities.”
Some toy experts argue that the best toys are the ones that increase a child’s creativity and imagination. Traditional toys can be used for different kinds of purposes and be used in group settings, individually(單獨地), and one-to-one. They are also used differently depending on the child’s age and skill level. And these toys made of natural materials are valuable for children because they teach children what the world is made of.
1.In how many ways do toys change according to the first paragraph?
A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.
2.The author used the example of “dice” to show that ________.
A. the toys are changing all the time
B. some toys are made of different materials
C. some toys don’t change over time
D. some toys’ materials don’t change over time
3.From the article, we can know that ________.
A. only children like to play with toys
B. toys have nothing to do with children’s future life
C. the development of toys is related to science and technology
D. plastic is the best material for making toys
4.According to Dr Singer, ________.
A. the electronic toys are good for children if they play often enough
B. the electronic toys prevent children keeping in touch with the real world
C. children should be stopped from being hurt by the danger coming from the outside world
D. children should play with electronic toys instead of the traditional ones
