For Iris Grace Halmshaw, the world was a lonely place. The autistic (自閉癥的) five-year-old girl tried to speak, and she was often thrown into pain by the world around her. She filled her days with painting, and nothing could quite change this situation. Until, that was, a cat called Thula came along.

The pair are now inseparable (形影不離的). Iris’ parents believe the gentle cat is helping their little girl communicate with others, as well as influencing her works of art. In the beginning, they thought it was just coincidence, but now they believe Iris is expressing her love for Thula through her painting. Mother said, “When Iris is painting, Thula is told by her to “sit down” if she jumps up onto the table. She stays there, watching Iris with great interest, sometimes wanting to play with the brushes, but mostly just patiently watching.”

And the pair’s bond (聯(lián)系) doesn’t end there. Thula is at Iris’ side for every part of her life. The pair’s closeness is having an effect on Iris’ relationships with others, and her parents find it easier to encourage her to talk to others. After researching the advantages of animal therapy for autistic children, the couple had tried introducing Iris to horses, dogs and even other cats with no success --- but things changed when Thula came to live with the family. During weeks, the cat was helping to comfort the little girl in times of stress.

Mother said, “It was as if they were old friends from the day they met. Thanks to Thula, new doorways to communication and feelings are opening and Iris is happier than ever before.”

A. The fact that something impossible happens.

B. The fact that something will certainly happen.

D. The fact that two unexpected things happened at the same time.

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A study found most people use their smart phones for an hour and 52 minutes a day. Most of this time is taken up with texting, emails and surfing the web, but only around 20 minutes is spent making three calls.

The survey of 2,000 people found that social media apps, calculators (計(jì)算器), calendars and cameras were

also seen as particularly important functions. Navigation apps (導(dǎo)航應(yīng)用) such as Google Maps were popular too – with one in six people admitting they would feel unable to travel around an unfamiliar city without one. The study also found checking Facebook and taking pictures of others are carried out more frequently than making calls. Also on the list were the calendar to remember appointments and birthdays, mobile banking and the news are apps that make day-to-day life a little easier.

Tom Barr said: ‘The functions on a mobile phone have developed and improved drastically (劇烈) over the past 10 years. With so many ways to keep in touch nowadays, people are using the functions that are convenient for them. As we get less and less time to ourselves, we need more convenience in our lives and less difficulty. While calling can be more personal, it doesn’t always save your time.’

Scientists at Rice University wanted to see if the latest mobile technology would be used by the students to

improve their learning. But a year later, the researchers concluded that it’s not enough to give students the right

technology, but said they need guidance about how to use it.

1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Most people spend nearly two hours texting a day.

B. Most people spend about 20 minutes making three calls a day.

C. Most people spend mosttime of a day making phone calls.

D. Most time of a day is taken up by surfing the web.

2.Why don’t most people make a lot of calls?

A. Because calling can be more personal.

B. Because it doesn’t always save your time.

C. Because social media apps are important functions.

D. Because calling is more convenient.

3.What does the underlined word "one" in the second paragraph refer to (指代)?

A. Social media apps.

B. Navigation apps.

C. Mobile phones.

D. Particularly important functions.

4. The writer mainly wants to tell us .

A. navigation apps such as Google Maps were popular

B. checking Facebook is carried out more frequently than making calls

Mental health is everyone’s business. We all have times when we feel down or stressed. Most of the time those feelings pass, but sometimes they develop into a more serious problem. Looking after my school flour(面粉) baby

Many girls like to have dolls in their childhood. If you visit our school, you will see lots of students carrying flour babies. We also have such classes to learn about what it’s like to be a parent.

The 10-pound (4.5kilograms) flour bags were used as babies. We decide the gender (性別) by throwing a coin. We parents must keep the babies’ faces exposed (暴露) for their breath and have to keep a close eye on them so that we don’t lose them. Mr. Craton, our history teacher like taking away “babies” when we parents lose attention. He takes 22 babies away from parents in four days.

We need to write a baby diary. To support the baby, we also need to find a job to feed the baby. Do you know the total cost of raising a baby for the first year? It is about $5,000.

I really love this special class. It helps students to understand how much their parents spend on them when they were little.
