One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.
1.” What’s the matter?” “I went to a party last night, so I…”
2.”I feel so tired these days.” “I think you’d better…”
3.”O(jiān)f course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most…”
You can see from the above three examples that the context helps a lot in understanding what is being talked about. So “guessing” is very important in understanding English, especially spoken English.
小題1:This passage tells us mainly about ________.
A.the importance of “guessing” in learning a foreign language.
B.how to guess what one is going to talk about.
C.Some examples of right guessing.

小題3:Maybe the finished answer in EXAMPLE 2 is ________.

D.“I think you’d better to be more careful.”
小題4:From the passage we can infer that guessing is ________ in learning a foreign language.

Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake places of the world – Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey – rats will soon be man’s new best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(救援) dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can’t get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat’s brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat’s brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “ ‘Robot’ noses don’t work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don’t need electricity.
The “ rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “ It would be fantastic. A rat would get into spaces we couldn’t get to and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building ( but only after an earthquake, of course.)
小題1:In the earthquake places, rats will become man’s best friends because they can __________.

A.the nose made by the rat
B.the rat’s unusual behavior
C.the signal sent by the radio on the rat’s back
D.the smell given off by the person
小題4:In doing rescue jobs, __________________________.
A.rats have better sense of smell than dogs.
B.dogs don’t need to be trained to smell people.
C.robots’ sense of smell can be affected by other smells around.

Carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒) causes death and injuries around the world. This gas is a problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather. A few years ago, America’s Centers for Disease Control (C. D. C.) studied deaths linked (聯(lián)系) with carbon monoxide poisoning. It found that the number of carbon monoxide deaths in the United States was greatest in January. The C.D.C. also found that carbon monoxide kills more than four hundred Americans each year. And, it said more than twenty thousand people are taken to hospital for treatment of health problems linked with the gas.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color, no taste and no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough. Yet, carbon monoxide gas is very deadly (致命的). It steals the body’s ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide makes it difficult for the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues (血管). It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it. Damage (損害) to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts (數(shù)量) of carbon monoxide.
How quickly this can happen depend on how long a person is breathing the gas and how much gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs(標(biāo)志). But people have to be awake to realize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person’s head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. Their stomachs may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly.
People develop serious headache as the amount of the gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomachache.
Doctors say carbon monoxide influences people differently. For example a small child will experience health problems or die much sooner than an adult. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important.

More and more Chinese people care for their own health. I come from England. I came to China five years ago. I began to learn cooking Chinese food from my father. When I was fifteen, I began to help my mother in the kitchen. My father is a very famous cook in Beijing. So he taught me many things about cooking. In the past three years, I never stopped learning cooking. When I saw a book called The disease eating out can be gone back again by eating (《把吃出來的病再吃回去》), I began studying the book. .The writer of the book is Zhang Wuben.
