Do you notice that though students spend the same amount of time in class, some get better grades than others? In some ways, it’s because they are different listeners. When having classes, some of them listen carefully. We call them effective listeners. Some just daydream or talk to others. They are ineffective listeners.

How are some listeners effective? First of all, they don’t care about some poor situations, like an uncomfortable seat or a personal problem. They say “No” to anything that will stop them from understanding and remembering. After leaving a class or meeting, they remember what the speakers said, not the room conditions or the speaker’s accent (口音).

Effective listeners always pay attention to the message itself. They try not to be influenced (被影響) by their own feelings or opinions. They do not decide if the thing is boring, too easy, or too difficult before listening. They like getting the challenge (挑戰(zhàn)) of new ideas. To help remember difficult ideas, they write down important words and phrases.

However, ineffective listeners often daydream. They don’t like to hear what they don’t agree with or easily understand. They are often so busy taking notes that they miss the speaker’s main idea. These listeners leave a speech or a class with a notebook full of words, but the notebook means nothing.

Do you wish to do well in your study? Start to be an effective listener. It may help.

It is a cold and dry winter morning. When you wake up, you feel that your throat (喉嚨) hurts. You begin to sneeze (打噴嚏) and later you may cough. You must have a cold! Wait a moment. Could it just be a common cold or the flu that’s been going around?

A cold gives you a runny nose and cough. But it’s usually easy to deal with. Some take medicine while others drink herbal (草藥的) tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a week.

On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you a fever. Sometimes it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million people from 1918 to 1919.

Don’t worry. If you get a flu vaccine (疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus (病毒). Flu vaccines work by giving body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop antibodies (抗體). So next time you get the flu, the antibodies should help you.

The flu virus changes every few years. Therefore, there are so many types of flu, such as H1N1 and H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu can’t help us against all types of flu. That’s why we need to get the vaccine every year.

However, good health habits may also help stop you from developing a cold or flu. Washing your hands often helps stop you from getting viruses. It is also important to get regular exercise and eat healthy food. All these can help you strengthen your immune system(增強(qiáng)免疫系統(tǒng)).
