After I did the " Weighing in on Recycling" experiment(實(shí)驗(yàn)),I wanted to find out more about how I could help reduce the amount of rubbish we produce. I asked my friends at the Ohio EPA and they told me about the three R's ― reduce, reuse and recycle.
One of the first things we all should do to help protect the environment is to try to produce less rubbish ( reduce) by doing things like putting our lunches in boxes that can be reused, taking smaller portions(部分)of food for dinner so that we don't waste food when we're full, and writing on both sides of pieces of paper.
The next important thing to remember is to reuse. Think about the bags you get from the store. They can be reused to cany your lunch, as rubbish bags or even to collect cans for recycling. You can even take them back to the store next time to carry your things instead of getting new bags.
The third step is to recycle. Be sure that you don't throw away things that can be recycled into something else. Paper, plastic and aluminum (鉛)cans can all be recycled.
Let's try to do more of the three R's every
day.

When you turn on the lights at New Farm, you are using electricity that comes from cows.
Cows produce a lot of waste. One cow can create about 135 liters(升)of waste in a single day. There are about 1,000 cows at New Farm. Imagine how much waste they produce every day!
Some of the cow waste is used as fertilizer (肥料)for the fields. But what about the rest? It used to be a problem. But now New Farm has a new way of using cow waste. They use it to produce electricity.
Here's how it works:A big machine moves around to collect the waste. "Hie cows aren't afraid of the machine," says Mr. Smith, the owner of New Farm. "TTiey have got used to it,and just lift one foot and then another to let it go by.” After collecting enough waste, the machine then pours it into a big digester(化糞池)In the digester, bacteria(細(xì)菌)get to work and much methane gas(沼氣)is produced. Methane gas is known as a " greenhouse” gas because it keeps heat just like a greenhouse does, causing our earth to warm up. But the digester has a good result. Its gas is kept and used to power electric generators(發(fā)電機(jī)), At New Farm, the generators make enough electricity to provide for 400 homes. Mr. Smith sells the electricity his farm does not need.
