Pumas (美洲獅) are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When a report came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been seen forty-five miles south of London, they didn't pay much attention. However, more and more reports came, so the experts from the zoo felt they should find out the truth.
They began to search for the puma in a small village where a woman saw a large cat only five yards away from her. It ran away as soon as she saw it. The experts said that a puma will not attack a person unless it is cornered. The search was difficult, for the puma was often seen at one place in the morning and at an other place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it left behind a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Several people complained of cat-like noise at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. Now the experts believed that this animal was a puma, but where did it come from? As no puma had been reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must belong to a private collector and somehow it succeeded in escaping. The search went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is terrifying to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

Long ago, the sky over California was full of condors (美洲禿鷹). Today, the sky is full of airplanes. People have taken over the condor's space. These big birds with giant wings are dying out.
Condors once flew along the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico. Then people moved into woods where the birds lived. By 1970, there were only about 50 condors left along the coast. Now there are less than 30. None of these birds may be left in 20 years.
Most people think the condors should be saved. People have different ideas for helping the birds. One group of people wants to study the birds and find out where they go. They also want to take the birds to zoos so that baby condors can be born there. A second group of people wants to leave the birds alone. Instead, they want to protect the wild places where the birds live.
