Online shopping is growing fast in China, and more and more Chinese are buying books online. At the same time, traditional bookstores are facing new challenges. A bookstore in Beijing is going out of business(生意). All of its books are on sale. Bookstore owner Wang Jian says hot sales of books on the Internet pushed him to change the way he did business.
China has the highest online book buying rate(率)in the world. More than years ago, dangdang.com became the first online bookseller, and now becomes very important in the Chinese online book market.
Facing this challenge, the Xinhua Bookstore also built its online store a few years ago. Zhang Jian, CEO of the Xinhuabookstore.com, says now they are enlarging their online services.
A “price war(戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng))”is taking shape between traditional bookstores and online bookstores. Faced with the low-cost advantage of online bookstores, traditional ones can do nothing but lower their prices. At the same time, online bookstores are also starting price wars between each other.
Now some traditional bookstores are trying their best to attract buyers in their own way. They exhibit books better and provide(提供) a very relaxed reading environment in the bookstore. Escaping (逃) from a fire is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save a life. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone in the family, for example, you can use stairways, roofs and fire escapes, but no lifts.
From the lower floors of buildings, to escape through windows is possible. Learn the best way of leaving by a window with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average (平均) person, hanging from the window by the fingertips will have a drop of about six feet to the ground--about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful while you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed, before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low next to the window to be sure you get fresh air.

Some people remember the things by writing notes to themselves. Then they leave the notes in obvious(明顯的) places, such as on the table or on the floor in the middle of the living room. I don’t think I like to write notes to myself. Most of the time I lose them or forget to look at them until it’s too late. I prefer to use an alarm clock to tell me what I should do. I have ten alarm clocks in my house. They could tell me about things. For example, if I have to make a telephone call at a certain time, I’ll set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the telephone. Or if I want to watch a certain television program, I’ll set an alarm clock at the right time and put the clock on top of the TV set. I can remember almost anything if I use my clocks. However, sometimes an alarm clock goes off and I don’t know what it means. I always remember setting it, but I do not know why I set it. If the clock is by the telephone, I know I may have set it to tell me to call someone, but I can’t be sure. I might have set it to tell myself that somebody was to call me at a certain time.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy.  After all,you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.
Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.
Do you know what a ’territory’ is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims(聲稱)as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same kind are welcome. Your garden and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten(威脅)you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.
If so,you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.
Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs..
You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.
小題1: Some scientists believe that most of the time bird’s singing is actually _______.
A.a(chǎn)way of warningB.a(chǎn)n expression of happiness
C.a(chǎn)n expression of angerD.a(chǎn)way of greeting

A.A place where families of other kinds are not accepted.
B.A place where a bird may shut at the top of its voice
C.An area for which birds fight against each other.
D.An area which a bird considers to be its own.
小題3: Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?
A.Because they want to invite more friends.
B.Because they want to find outsiders around.
C.Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.
D.Because their singing helps remove their fears.
小題4:How does the writer explain bird’s singing?
A.By comparing birds with human beings.B.By reporting experiment results.
C.By describing birds’ daily life.D.By telling a bird’s story.
