Billy Mills,a Native American, was born and raised on a reservation in the United States. Childhood was not easy for Billy. His family was not well off; he lost his mother when he was seven, and his father passed away five years later. After his father's death,Billy was sent to a boarding school. At school Billy started running to help him forget his problems. To his amazement,he found that he had a talent for running and broke a number of high school records. As a result of his running,he was given an athletic scholarship (獎學(xué)金) to the University of Kansas.

At the University of Kansas,Billy continued to win many competitions. After graduation he joined the United States Marine corps (海軍陸戰(zhàn)隊) .At first he focused (投入) on military (軍事) life, but he soon returned to running. He did well enough to race in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the 10 ,000 meters and marathon events.

Although he was the US team, many people did not expect anything from Billy. In the H) ,000 meters,Billy was almost a minute slower than the favorite,Ron Clarke of Australia. The other favorite to win the Olympic gold was Mohammad Cammoudi of Tunisia. The rest of the runners included Olympic gold and world record holders. All eyes were focused on the front runners, not on Billy.

When the race started, everyone was surprised to see Billy Mills at the front with Ron Clarke. For much of the race, the two ran together with Gammoudi just behind them. Everyone else was out of the race, and the crowd expected Mills to tire and slow down.

Near the end of the race,Gammoudi ran between Clark and Mills and pushed them aside. The two of them almost fell over and Mills dropped behind into third place. However,Mills was determined not to lose. He raced ahead to win the gold, and set an Olympic 10 ,000-meter record. He was the first Native American to win the Olympic 10 ,000-meter race.

Chuck Wall teaches management and human relations at Bakersfield College. He walked into class one day and told his students that their homework was to perform one act of random (任意的) kindness. His students did not understand the homework and didn't know what to do,but the professor would not answer their questions. He encouraged his students to work it out for themselves.

One week later, the students entered the classroom excited to share their stories. One student told of giving away blankets to the homeless. Another reported on helping a dog to find its owner, and another student had been trying to find a long, lost friend. Students were energized (給予;舌力) by the homework assignment and wanted other people to be kind too. With the support of local businesses, the students made stickers to put on cars that invited people to do something kind for others. They sold the stickers and decided to donate the money to a center for the blind―not surprising as Professor Wall is blind.

Since then, similar kindness activities have been started in schools around the world. Many schools organize a Random Acts of Kindness Week, around November 13th,to celebrate World Kindness Day. Hello,my name's Xiao Jingwen. You can call me Irene. Fm 14 years old. I was born inChina. I used to live in Wuhan,Hubei. Now I am in Year 10        at Park side Community College,a school in Cambridge,UK. I'll tell you about the fun things I do in this country.

I like cycling, especially here in the UK. I live in Cambridge, where I can get anywhere on my bike. But biking in theUKis a different experience from biking inChina.

First of all,you have to ride on the left hand side of the road, not the right as you do in China. It was quite a challenge for me when I got here.

Once when I was on my bike I heard someone yell at me ," Wrong side!Wrong side!" I didn't get it first but then I saw the cars rushing by me. I was scared. Thank God,nothing crashed into me!

You also need bicycle clips (裝備) for your trousers and a helmet (頭盔) .The clips are to stop your trousers getting caught in the chain.

Some people also have a milometer (計程表) on the handlebars (車把) .It shows them how many miles they have traveled.

But Chinese bikes have somethingUKbikes don't. In China, there are stands at the backs of bikes. You don't see those in theUK.

This means people can't just leave their bikes anywhere. There are special parks where you leave your bike. Smart, isn't it?
