Language is always changing and developing. This isn’t a bad thing. If English hadn’t changed for a long time, we won’t have words to describe telephones, washing machines, computers or some other new things.
Language changes for several reasons. First, it changes because the needs of its speaker change. New technologies, new products, and new experiences need new words to express them clearly. Another reason for change is that different people have different language experiences. People use different sets of words and expressions, because they have different ages, jobs, education levels(水平) and so on.
How does language develop then? On the one hand, many of the languages changes begin with young people. When young people communicate with others of their own age, their language grows in grammar, words and expressions that are different from the older people’s. Some have a short lifetime but others can influence the language for long. On the other hand, we get new words in many different ways. We borrow them from other languages, we create them by making words shorter or combining words and we make them out of proper names.
Languages that don’t change over time are considered dead languages. The fact that English changes so much shows that it is alive and well.
小題1:What does the writer think of the change and development of language?
He thinks it is                       .
小題2:Why do people use different sets of words and expressions according to the passage?

They do it when they                  others of their own age.
小題5: What is considered a dead language according to the passage?
The one that                   over time is considered a dead language.

In Britain, the first day of the month of May is known as May Day. May day marks the end of the harsh(嚴(yán)酷的) winter months, welcomes the beginning of Summer, and optimistically looks forward to the bright and productive months.

For their ancestors, largely in rural areas, it was a major annual festival and was celebrated(慶祝) through out the country, especially on the first day of May with music, dancing and games.
How was May Day Celebrated in the past?

May Day began early in the morning. People went out before sunrise in order to gather flowers and plants to make their houses and villages beautiful in the belief that the vegetation spirits(神靈) would bring good luck.
A traditional May Day dance is Maypole Dancing,On May Day, people used to cut down young trees and stick them in the ground in the village to mark the arrival of summer.People danced around the tree poles in celebration of the end of winter and the start of the fine weather that would allow planting to begin. Maypoles are still a part of some
village life and on May Day the villagers dance around it.

May Day celebrations have their origins(起源) in the Roman festival of Flora, goddess(女神) of fruit and flowers, which marked the beginning of summer. By tradition she took no part in the games or dancing, but sat like a queen in a flower-decked chair to watch her 'subjects'.
Ever since 1978, for the convenience of the general public, many May Day activities have now been moved to the new May Day holiday on the first Monday of the month. This Monday is a bank holiday, a day off school and work. There are more intereting celebrations on this day.

Knowing how to ask for information and help politely is important. In English, “Where are the restrooms?” and “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are?” are similar requests (請(qǐng)求) — both are correct English, but the first could sound rude. It’s important to use correct language, but sometimes this alone is not enough — we need to learn how to be polite when we make requests.

In English, just like in Chinese, we change the way we speak when talking with different people. The expressions you use might depend on whom you are speaking to or how well you know them. If you say to your teacher, “Where is my book?” this will sound rude. But if you say, “Excuse me, Mr West. Do you know where my book is?” your question will sound much more polite. On the other hand, it might be alright to say “Where is my book?” to the people you know well.
And you would not usually say, “Peter, lend me your pen.” A very direct order like this can sound rude in English. Usually in English polite questions are longer and include extra (附加的) language, such as “Could you please...?” or “Can I ask...?” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please lend me your pen?” If you stop a stranger in the street, we might first say, “Excuse me. I wonder if you can help me.” or “I’m sorry to trouble you but…” before asking him for help.
It might seem that speaking politely is more difficult than being direct, and in a way this may be true.
小題1:When we make requests, we need to speak in a ____ way.
A.politeB.carefulC.differentD.direct
小題2:You should say “____” when you ask a stranger for a way.
A.Which is the way to the zoo?
B.How can I get to the zoo?
C.Do you know the way to the zoo?
D.Excuse me. Can you tell me the way to the zoo?
小題3:Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.We should use long sentences when we ask for information and help.
B.When we ask for help from others, polite language must be used.
C.The way of speaking is important when we ask different people for help.
D.In English, polite questions are as neccessary as rude and direct ones.
