Typhoons (臺風(fēng)) in the northern part of the world have girls' names. Sometimes they have very
beautiful names. Rose is a pretty name but there was nothing pretty about Typhoon Rose. It was the
worst typhoon to hit Hong Kong in ten years.
It began to rain in the morning of Monday, August 16th, 1971. At ten o'clock in the morning,
Typhoon Rose was still 130 miles away but already the wind was blowing people's umbrella away.
The wind became stronger and stronger. The typhoon shelters (避風(fēng)港) were soon full of boats.
Ships that were too big to go inside the shelters put down more anchors (錨). Some very big shops
went out to sea. It is safer for a big shop to be at sea in a typhoon because it cannot be blown onto
rocks. Kai Tak Airport closed. No planes were able to take off or land. At 9:00 in the evening, all
the lights went out.
No one slept well that night. It is difficult to sleep in such bad weather.
In Typhoon Rose, more than one hundred people died. 229 people were hurt and 66 of these had
to go to hospital. 1500 lost their homes. The people of Hong Kong will not quickly forget Typhoon Rose!

Living  in a  foreign culture  can be  exciting,  but it can also be confusing(令人迷惑的 ).  A group of
Americans who taught English in  other countries recently discussed  their  experiences. They decided that
miscommunications(溝通誤解) were always possible, even over something as simple as " yes " and " no ".
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific(太平洋), Lisa thought people weren't paying any attention to her.  The day was  hot.  She went  into a store and  asked, " Do you have cold drinks?"  The
woman there  didn't  say anything.  Lisa repeated  the question.  Still the woman  said nothing.  She  later
learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛),which in Micronesia means "yes".
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was famous for its cabbage. She asked the waiter,  "Do you have cabbage today?"  He nodded his head.
Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means "no".
Tom had a similar problem when  arrived  in India.  After explaining something in  class,  he asked his
students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought
some people  had not  understood, so he explained again. When  he asked again, they did the same thing.
He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on(依據(jù))where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean "yes" or "no".

In the wild, tea plants may be 30 feet tall. But a plant grown for market is pruned(修剪).Pruning keeps the plant only three or four feet tall. This is an easy height for tea picking. Only the two top leaves of each

instance, it may prevent heart disease(病).
How did we get tea bags? The answer: by accident. People used to send tea in tin boxes.  This was
expensive. Someone thought of a cheaper way. He sent tea in small silk bags. Customers would open the bag. They would put the leaves into a pot as usual. One customer put the bag into a pot. Then he just
poured hot water over it. And the tea bag was born.
Shen Nong was the first to drink tea. This was about 2737 B.C.Shen was ill, so he drank several cups of hot water daily. One day something happened.  Leaves from a wild tea tree fell into the hot water pot.
The next cup was poured. The water was now colored. Shen tasted it.  He liked it.  He drank it all. Shen was proud of his new drink. He served it to his guests. World spread. People thought this way. Tea is
good enough for the emperor. So it must be good enough for the people. Tea became the drink of China.
