Miss Wu is a young teacher of English in China. She loves teaching very much. One day when she was giving an English lesson, she found the headmaster sitting at the back of the classroom. After class, the headmaster told her that he came to her class to find out how much English and how much Chinese she was using. The result was about half English and half Chinese. She was using Chinese when she gave instructions to her students and when she wanted to get feedback(反饋)from her students. The headmaster told her that she should use more English in her class.

Miss Wu made a plan like this:

talk with an Englishman every Sunday for two hours to learn more English expressions;

write some English expressions on cards. These cards not only remind her to use English in class, but also help her remember some expressions;

It was near Christmas during my first semester teaching a new school. I love my small special class
more than any group I had taught in the past. They were hungry for knowledge and I was enjoying teaching.
Other teachers had told me that our children were from poor families and not to expect any child to bring
a Christmas gift. In fact, I wasn't expecting any gifts.
Imagine my surprise when every child brought me a gift on the day before our holiday break. First, I got
a much-loved stuffed monkey from a shy girl. I was told, "He is my favorite, but I love you and I want him
to be with you, Miss Taylor "How thrilled I was!"
Next came a new set of Christmas tree lights that was "missing" from a mother's cupboard.
Finally, I came to one little boy's gift which I had never received. It was an old, dirty and broken
Christmas story book. Just then I wanted to express my happiness, I was interrupted (打斷) by the giver,"
And see, it is new! It still has the price tag."
When other children laughed at him, I stopped them and said, "Oh, books are good in that way. The story
is always new if you have not read it before. Now, Let's share one together." Everyone listened quietly as I
read the most wonderful Christmas story of my life.
I still keep those Christmas gifts, They always remind me of my lovely kids.

Here are some American classroom customs :
If the teacher asks a question, you are expected to give an answer. If you do not understand the
question, you should put up your hand and ask the teacher to repeat the question. If' you do not know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher that you do not know. Then he or she knows what you need to
learn.
There is no excuse for not doing your homework.  If you are absent (缺席的) ,  you should call your
teacher or someone who is in your class and ask about the assignment(作業(yè)).  It is your responsibility(責(zé)任)  to find out what the assignments you have missed are. It is not the teacher's responsibility to remind
you of the missed assignments.
You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests, you should take the test within one or two days after returning to class. Serious illness is the only reason for missing a test.
Be on time !  It is considered( 認(rèn)為)  rude to be late. Also, it disturbs other students. If you must come in late, be sure to do it quietly. Have your books and papers out of your bag before you come into the
room. Then go to your seat and sit quietly. In the US it is not necessary to knock before you enter the
classroom. If you must leave during class ,  do so quietly.  There is no need to ask the teacher's
permission. Entering a teacher's office or any office with a closed door without knocking first is not
acceptable.  Knock first , then wait to be invited in.
Wearing a hat in class is considered impolite by many teachers. Some teachers may ignore it, but you
should ask permission first.
根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,回答下列問(wèn)題。
1. What should a student do if he or she doesn't understand the teacher's question?

Dear Mr. Scott,
I'm writing to complain about my deskmate, Lana. She likes junk food (垃圾食品) and she always
brings some to school. After she eats it, she drops the litter into my desk. She also has a bad habit. After

Dear Celia,

with me.
I talked to Lana yesterday. She said she did these things because of her carelessness(粗心). She
wanted to be polite with our help. She agreed to put the litter in a bag. She said she would do her own
homework and be careful with her pen. She asked you to remind (提醒) her by saying "Would you mind
returning my pencil?"
