Mountains are usually not so good places for people to live in,mainly because the weather in high mountains are worse than that in lower lands. In the mountains there is less ground to grow plants, and plant growing is not often successful because of the bad weather. Fewer people live in mountains above 2,500 meters. The higher a mountain rises, the less air there island it is more difficult for people to breath. If a mountain is higher than 8,000 meters, like Qomolangma, there is not enough air to support human life. This is known as the“death zone (死亡區(qū)域) ”.

As we all know that most of the world’s rivers are fed from the snow and rain water of the mountains. More than half of the people in the world depend on mountains for water. Mountains are also rich in minerals (礦產(chǎn)) ,which are important for people there to make a living. More recently,a lot of national parks and ski fields (滑雪場(chǎng)) are built in mountain areas. A lot more people go to the mountains to spend their holidays during the hot weather, because it is much cooler in the mountains. So mountain tourism (方游業(yè)) are developing very fast.

Mountain climbing as a sport has a history of more than 150 years. It first became popular in England and soon all over the world. However, not many people have reached the tops of the highest mountains. Now more and more people like to climb mountains. It has become one of the best sports. Many scientists do scientific research when they are climbing mountains.
