As a single parent of four children, money was always tight .It was Christmas time, and although  there wasn’t money for a lot of gifts, we planned to celebrate with a family party . But the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas (36).
They planned weeks ahead of time , asking (37) what they wanted for Christmas. luckily, I have saved $120 for (38) to share by all five of us .

Driving home, everyone was in high Christmas spirits (42) my younger daughter, Tina, who was unusual (43). She had only one small, flat bag with a few candies—fifty-cent candies! I was so angry, but I didn’t say anything (44) we got home. I called her into my bedroom and closed the door,(45) to be angry again. This is what he told me:
“ I was looking (46) thinking of what to buy , and I (47) to read the title cards on the ‘Giving Trees.’ One was for a little girl, four years old. And all she (48) for Christmas was a doll .So I took the card off the tree and (49) the doll for her. We have so much and she doesn’t have anything.”
I never felt so (50) as I did that day.

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her sit by her window each afternoon, sewing(針線活) or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window inside.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! Across the way, the woman sitting by her window was seen clearly. Her window was clean!
Then it dawned on me. I had been criticizing(批評) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through(通過) my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own mistakes?
Since then, whenever I wanted to judge (評判) someone, I asked myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window?”
Then I try to clean the window of my own world so that I may see the world about me more clearly.

Most of you know this mathematical game, of course. You and your friend draw crosses and circles on a sheet of paper. You do it one after another. The first pupil who gets three marks in a row wins. But do you know that you can play this game another way and it will become more interesting? You must try to make your friend win. If you get your three marks in a row, you don’t win — you lose!

It is more difficult to play this game the other way. The second pupil can always win (if he plays the right way), but he may not win if the first pupil begins with his mark in the center. Then if the first pupil always takes a place on the other side of his friend’s mark, nobody will win.
If your friend does not know the secret which we have explained, you must play each time so as to leave him the greatest number of ways to win. You may try a few games and you will see how interesting it is to play the game this way.
