Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to England! The weather of England is very changeable (易變的). It can be rainy, sunny, cloudy, windy, stormy, warm, foggy, or cold at any time of the year. If it is raining when you get up in the morning, it can be hot and dry by the afternoon. It may be sunny when you get up, but when you go out, it may be rainy. So don’t forget to take an umbrella with you. The west of England is wetter than the east, and the north is cooler than the south. You should be ready for any kind of weather.
In England, shops are usually open from 9.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. On Sundays, some shops are open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. But a lot of shops are closed. Banks, museums or other places are open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. You can go to the parks at any time.
All the cities have buses, trains and taxis. People wait in line for buses and they are unhappy if you push in at the front. Don’t forget that traffic goes on the left.

Scientists who study the climate (氣候) are still arguing about how fast the earth is warming and how much it will warm, but they do agree that the earth is warming and that it will keep warming if we don’t do anything about it.
Scientists agree that the burning of fossil fuels (化石燃料) like oil and coal cause greenhouse gases to escape (釋放) into the air and that these gases are causing most of the warming. Another cause is deforestation ( cutting down trees ) . Trees soak up carbon dioxide  (二氧化碳) , one of the greenhouse gases, from the air.
There are already some changes happening because of global warming. Sea level is rising and some animals are already moving to new homes. It’s already too late to stop global warming completely.
If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some kinds of plants and animals that become extinct (滅絕的) because they can’t move to new homes. There may be more storms and floods. Sea level may rise so much that people have to move away from the coasts. Some areas may become too dry for farming.
Global warming is a very difficult problem to fix. People are having a hard time agreeing on what to do about it. For example, everyone agrees that wasting energy is a bad thing to do. But some people think that the federal government (聯(lián)邦政府) should make laws about it, while other people think it should be up to each person or business to decide what to do.
Many states and businesses in the United States are not waiting until the federal government decides what to do. They have already started working on the problem.

Barack Obama, the US President-elect, is busy choosing members of his cabinet. His daughters, Sasha and Malia, are busy, too. They are making difficult decisions about different dog breeds (品種).
“The girls asked when we got in this race that [whether] win or lose, we get a dog,” said Michelle Obama. “So we will be welcoming a four-legged friend to our house.”
No matter what type of puppy Sasha and Malia pick, it will be a part of a long story of White House pets. Everything from snakes to bears has lived at the White House with the president and his family.
Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president, kept a pet raccoon (浣熊). Warren Harding had turkeys. William Howard Taft parked his cow in the White House garage too.
John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, had a pet alligator (鱷魚). But he wasn’t the only White House resident to have one. Herbert Hoover’s son had two pet alligators, and they were sometimes allowed to roam (閑逛) around the White House.
Bears have also been popular with American presidents. While Thomas Jefferson kept two grizzlies (灰熊) in a cage, Theodore Roosevelt had a black bear. Roosevelt’s interest in bears later led to the creation of the toy teddy bear.
Roosevelt and his six children loved animals, and they filled the White House with them. They had dogs, cats, squirrels (松鼠), raccoons, rabbits, guinea pigs, a badger (獾), a rat, a parrot, and a green snake.
