There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are crazy. Let’s have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be more successful.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there was too much alcohol (酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn’t start. It sounded like a great idea to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency (緊急情況) even if they had drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his children watched too much TV. He connected the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to power the TV was produced by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV, they had to pedal (踩動(dòng)) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which encouraged good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray (煙灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray was started by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers! The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead? A friend of mine at school once bought a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs (轉(zhuǎn)動(dòng)釘墊). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do “high fives” with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.
1. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the inventions mentioned in Paragraph 2?
A. The writer regrets he knew nothing about the inventions.
B. he writer doubts if the inventions will be popular soon.
C. The writer thinks these inventions will do good to people.
D. The writer finds these inventions are the strangest of all.
2.What can we know from the passage?
A. The father used his invention to stop children watching too much TV.
B. It was very bad for the drivers to blow into a bag before their driving.
C. The bike crossing rivers was considered one of the best inventions.
D. The invention of new shoes would make players run much faster.
3. The underlined word “inflate” in the third paragraph means ________.
A. check out B. blow up
C. look into D. turn over
4.What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Popular Inventions Today
B. Technology and Invention
C. Inventions with a Difference
D. The History of Invention

FOR people who are interested in space, nothing is more exciting than the idea of living on other planets. That might be why the movie The Martian (《火星救援》) is so popular. It shows an astronaut struggling to live on Mars. But would it actually be possible to live on the Red Planet?
While the idea of living on Mars is great, the reality does not look as good. Mars does not have a friendly atmosphere for humans. There is very little oxygen there. And because of its distance from the sun, it is also very cold. The temperature on Mars can be -62 degrees on average. This is much too cold for humans.
However, scientists say it might be possible to live there even without a good atmosphere. Daytime on Mars is almost the same as Earth’s. It means there’s enough sunlight to grow plants inside safe buildings. However, they would have to grow in soil from Earth. Mars does not have a strong enough atmosphere to stop the radiation coming from space, which makes it dangerous to grow things in the soil.
The radiation is also bad for our health. If we want to live there healthily, we need to build our homes under the ground or within the rocks on the planet. This would protect humans from the radiation and also some heat.
When could we actually live on Mars? NASA is hoping to make some progress within the next 20 years.
1.The film The Martian is mentioned in Paragraph 1 to _____.
A. introduce the topic of living on Mars
B. tell readers something about the film
C. explain the development of the film-making business
D. show people’s knowledge of Mars
2.Which of the following about Mars is NOT true?
A. Its atmosphere is not good for humans.
B. It has very little oxygen.
C. It’s colder than Earth.
D. It’s closer to the sun than Earth is.
3.It’s possible to grow plants on Mars because _____.
A. there is enough sunlight
B. the soil is good on Mars
C. it has a good underground atmosphere
D. its temperature changes very little
4.What does Para. 4 mainly talk about?
A. What problems the radiation causes.
B. How to avoid bad conditions on Mars.
C. How to build homes on Mars.
D. How to protect Mars.

There have never been many adventurers. You can read stories about men called adventurers. But they were really businessmen. There was something they wanted----- a lady, or money, or a country, or honor. And so they got it. But a true adventurer is different. He starts without any special purpose. He is ready for anything he may meet.
There have been many half-adventurers. And they were great men. History is rich with their stories. But each of them had a special purpose. They were not followers of true adventure.
In the big city of New York, Romance and Adventure are always waiting.
As we walk along the street, they are watching us. We look up suddenly and see a face in a window. The face seems to interest us strangely. Or in a quiet street, we hear a cry of fear and pain coming from a house where no one lives. A car takes us to a strange door, instead of to our own. The door opens and we are asked to enter. At every corner, eyes look toward us, or hands are raised, or fingers point. Adventure is offered.
But few of us are ready to accept. We are ready to do only the things we do every day. We wish to do only the things that everyone else does. We move on; and some day we come to the end of a long quiet life. Then we begin to think. Then, when it is too late, we are sorry that we have never known true Romance and Adventure.
1.In the author’s opinion, there are ____ true adventurers.
A. many B. few C. no D. a few
2.In what way does the author say a true adventurer is different from a businessman?
A. He is ready for anything he may meet.
B. He is not interested in money.
C. He enjoys excitement while a business man does not.
D. A true adventurer is romantic, while a businessman is dull.
3.According to the passage, a cry of fear and pain coming from a house where no one lives in a quiet street means____.
A. a number B. a fight C. wealth D. adventure
4.The passage doesn’t mention it, but we can infer from the passage that when most people meet an offer of adventure, they will ____.
A. grow angry but curious
B. accept the offer
C. grow embarrassed and reject the offer
D. be frightened and cry for help.
5.When do most people wish that they had known romance and adventure?
