Miss Wu is a young teacher of English in China. She loves teaching very much. One day when she was giving an English lesson, she found the headmaster sitting at the back of the classroom. After class, the headmaster told her that he came to her class to find out how much English and how much Chinese she was using. The result was about half English and half Chinese. She was using Chinese when she gave instructions(說明、指令) to her students and when she wanted to get feedback(反饋)from her students. The headmaster told her that she should use more English in her class.
Miss Wu made a plan like this: firstly, talk with an Englishman every Sunday for two hours to learn more English expressions(表達(dá)); secondly, write some English expressions on cards. These cards not only remind her to use English in class, but also help her remember some expressions; thirdly, have a five-minute talk in English with students before class. She used body language to help her if students could not understand.
One year later, she found she could use English freely in class.

An important question about eating out is who pays for the meal. If a friend of yours asks you to have lunch with him, you may say something like this, “I’m afraid it’ll have to be someplace cheap, as I have little money.” The other person may say, “OK, I’ll meet you at McDonald’s.”
This means that the two agree to go Dutch, that is, each person pays for himself. He may also say, “Oh, no, I want to take you to lunch at Smith’s,” or “I want you to try the Chinese dumplings there. They are great.” This means the person wants to pay for both of you. If you feel friendly towards this person, you can go with him and you needn’t pay for the meal. You may just say, “Thank you. That would be very nice.”
American custom(風(fēng)俗) about who pays for dates(約會(huì)) are much the same as in other parts of the world. In the old days, American women wanted men to pay for all the meals. But, today, a university girl or a woman in business world will usually pay her way during the date. If a man asks her for a dance outside the working hours, it means “Come, as my guest(客人).” So as you can see, it is a polite thing to make the question clear at the very beginning.

These days, I’m surprised at what my classmates have changed since school started. It’s not just the new teachers, new buildings, or new rules. I also notice how people are dressing differently. Dressing is not just a choice to keep warm. It’s also a healthy personal choice in so many ways.
Dress rules: Many schools have dress rules. They tell students what to wear at school. The teachers don’t hope to see their students wear unsuitable clothes in the classroom.
Self-respect: The way we dress shows the way we feel about ourselves. If we aren’t confident or need lots of attention, we’ll often dress in ways that help us get that attention. If you want to get attention in a healthy way, you don’t need to dress in an interesting way to express your mind.
Body image(形象): If some kids look very bad or ugly, dressing properly(正確地) can cover them. And it can also help them feel beautiful and comfortable among their friends.
Being what you wear: Dressing is important. Dressing in a wrong way can make people mistake(誤解)you. People like to judge according to what they see. Clothing can often give people a wrong idea.

Bai Yansong, a famous TV host, expressed his support for students wearing green scarves (綠領(lǐng)巾) at a primary school in Xi’an. He wore a green tie on a TV program on October 19, 2011. “I just want the students to know that I’m also wearing green. And we are all great people and are as good as those wearing red scarves.”
The First Experimental Primary School in Xi’an made children with poor schoolwork and behavior wear green scarves. Parents whose children wore green scarves were angry. “The children still need their self-esteem (自尊心) even though they are very young, and they know the green scarf means something is not quite right,” said one mother. Now, the school has stopped the practice.
Educational expert Li Zhenxi said that primary and junior high school students have strong self-esteem. They are eager to be respected and understood. Punishment will hurt them. “It’s better to encourage them rather than separating some ‘bad’ students,” he said.
A survey made by the Ministry of Education (教育部) shows that 75 percent of students feel nervous and scared when the teacher is about to announce their grades. Some schools have done better in protecting students’ privacy and encouraging them. In American schools, teachers post test results on the wall. Instead of using student names, they use secret numbers. This way, students know their secret numbers and can check their own grades only. Some teachers might call the students up to the desk and tell them their scores one at a time.
But test scores are not the only measures of a student’s ability. Everyone has his own strengths and everyone can make great progress by working hard.

School education(教育) is very important and useful. Yet, no one can learn everything from school. A teacher, no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher’s job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So, much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.
It is always more important to know how to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula(公式). It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in math. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a math problem.
Great scientists didn’t get everything from school. For example, Edison didn’t even finish primary school. But they were all so successful. They invented so many things . The reason for their success was that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read. They did thousands of experiments. They worked hard all their lives, wasting not a single moment. Above all, they knew how to use their brain.
