A wise old gentleman retired and bought a small but comfortable home near a junior middle school. He spent his first few weeks of his retirement in peace. Then a new school year started. Every afternoon, three young boys came down his street, kicking happily every trash can (垃圾罐) they came across. The crashing noise continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action.

The next afternoon,he walked out to meet the young kids as they walked their way down the street. Stopping them,he said, " You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you show your energy like that. I used to do the same thing when I was your age. I'll give you each a dollar if you promise to come around every day and do your thing."

The kids were very pleased and continued to do their job on the trash cans. After a few days, the old man greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "The day before yesterday,I got a lot of money stolen," he told them. "From now on,I'll only be able to pay you 50        cents to kick the cans."The noise makers were clearly unhappy, but they did accept his offer and continued their afterschool work.

A few days later, the old man approached to them again as they kicked their cans down the street.

"Look," he said. "My TV set didn't work last week. It cost much money to have it repaired,so Fm not going to be able to give you more than 25        cents. Will that be okay?"

"Just a quarter?"the biggest kid shouted. "If you think we're going to waste our time, kicking these cans around for a quarter, you are nuts!No ways, master. We quit!"

On Sundays my father always wore that gray apron (圍裙) .After breakfast he always announced, "Go ahead everyone. I'll wash the dishes!" For the next hour Dad did the dishes, singing songs like /Had a Hat When I Came In.

I suppose it was strange for a boy's father to wear an apron. It was the last Sunday in August. My father seemed happy as we walked home from the supermarket together.

"Tommy," he said, "there comes a time in every boy's life when he must take on responsibilities (責任) .Starting today. I want you to wash the dishes on Sunday morning so your mother and I can read the newspaper."

"Wash the dishes?!"

"Anything wrong with doing the dishes, son?"

I started to say something about a man's job or a woman's work, but I knew quickly that my protests (抗議) would be of no use.

I didn't taste a bit of breakfast that morning. Dad seemed excited as he talked about a soccer game on TV and didn't notice me at all.

Suddenly, everthing grew quiet. My sister began to clear the table. My brother was eating the last of the egg on his plate. And then my father said to my mother, "Let's go and read the paper, dear."

So this was what my life had come to. I could learn Latin well,I could be good at playing baseball,I could do anything, but I could never do those dishes. There was nothing left but to refuse.

"I want you to have this,Tommy. It'll keep your clothes from getting wet. " And before I could say a word,he had put the thing on me. "Thanks,Son."

It's very early in the morning and I'm sitting outside. It's also very cold and dark. With me is Jim Nightingale, and he is the reason I'm up so early. He passes me a hot cup of coffee. "Not long to wait now," he says. I hope he's right.

After a few minutes there is a very weak light in the east, and then I hear a bird singing. It sings very loudly and very clearly. "That's the robin (知更鳥) ,"says Jim. A few more birds start singing with the robin, and Jim knows the names of them, too. Half an hour later, there are more and more birds singing, and it's very loud!Suddenly, all around us is the sound of the birdsong. This is the dawn chorus (晨鳴) ,and it's beautiful.

"Wow,this is amazing!" I tell Jim,who is smiling. "Is there a dawn chorus every morning?"

"Birds can sing any time of the year, but the best time is the end of winter and during the spring. This is when the birds sing most."

"Really? Then, why do they sing?" I ask.

"Well, there are two reasons," explains Jim. "Most of the songbirds are males. They want to find a female (雌性) ,so they sing to show how strong they are. The female birds just listen and choose the best singer! The birds also sing to tell other males to go away. They need their own area. They don't like sharing with another male."

I listen to the birds, the songs seem too much to me. "Do the birds sing a special song in the morning?"

"That's a good question," replies Jim. "The successful birds have many kinds of calls and songs. Sometimes they copy the songs of other birds. This makes it sound like there are many birds in that place already and other males stay away. Also the female likes songs with different notes. Some birds, for example the European wren, have songs that contain over 700 different notes per minute!”

So,how does Jim know so much about birds? Well,he works as a volunteer for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. He is trying to help the birds live in the modern world. " More and more of the birds' habitat disappears every year. The sparrow, for example, was a very common bird in the UK,now it's in danger."

"Wash every day and you'll die young,my son!”People often said those words, long ago of course. Napoleon's wife had new clothes every month, instead of a bath. " lt,s quicker," she always said. Rich people did not often have a bath. They washed their hands and faces, but not their bodies. Many poor people did not wash at all. A young man once said to a doctor, 4t Soap and water have never touched my body.”And the doctor answered, uThat's true. I know..."

Well, they did not have water in their house. They carried water from rivers or from holes in the ground. Town people bought it from a watercarrier. We always celebrated Dad's birthday on Thanksgiving Day,even after he entered a nursing home. As years went on,these celebrations had double meanings to us―a traditional birthday party for Dad,thanking him for all that he had done for us in our lives. When we knew it might be his last birthday, the whole family decided to get together for a huge birthday celebration at the nursing home.

Dad was a good storyteller and we were always his listeners. But at this special moment,I announced it was now Dad's turn to listen to stories for a change. I asked everyone to tell Dad why he loved him. The room became still. Then one after another, people told stories from their hearts, while Dad listened with tears in eyes. People brought kinds of stories back to our minds―stories about when they were little, stories about when Dad was young, and stories that shared family happiness.

The stories went on one after another. Everyone seemed to have more than one story. Even the little grandchildren couldn't wait to tell Dad why they loved him. For a man who had been kind to so many people in his life, here was our chance to celebrate him. A few months later,at Dad's memorial service,we more fully realized what we had given Dad that night. Those are the stories people usually tell at a funeral (葬禮) after a loved one is no longer alive to hear the words. They tell stories, full of tears. But we had given those memories to Dad in his life, and we had told them through laughter, accompanied (伴隨) by hugs and joys. He had them in his mind during his last days and months.

Words do matter, and they are enough. We just need to say them or to speak them publicly to the ones we love. That's the way to give back love and our chance to celebrate a person in his or her life.
