When I was about six years old, my brother David and I visited our aunt, Mary. We stayed in her house for a night. David was only 4 years old, and was still        of the dark., so Mary left the hall light on when we slept.
However, David      the grey moths(蛾) flying around the hall light. He asked Mary to make the moths go away. When she asked      , she simply said, “Because they are ugly and scary, I don’t like them.” Mary laughed and said, “Being ugly outside doesn’t      not being beautiful inside. In fact, moths are one of the most beautiful animals in the animal world.
“Once, the angels (天使) were      . They were sad because it was raining heavily. The        little moths hated to see others so sad. They decided to make a rainbow(彩虹) to cheer up the angels. They thought if the butterflies(蝴蝶)      ,  they could make a beautiful rainbow together.
“Then one of the moths went to ask the butterflies for help. But the butterflies didn’t want to      any of their colors, so the moths decided to make a rainbow themselves. They beat their wings very hard and the colors on them made a rainbow. They kept giving a little more and a little more       the rainbow went across the sky. They had given away all their colors except grey, which didn’t match the beautiful rainbow.
“Then the once-colorful moths became      . The angles saw the rainbow and smiled…” My brother went to sleep with that story and hasn’t feared months since then.

Are you in a bad mood? Don’t worry! According to a new Australian study, a bad mood can actually be good for you. The study showed that being sad could help people to judge others more correctly and was also good for the memory.
The study was carried out by Professor Joseph Forgas at the University of New South Wales.“People in a bad mood paid more attention to the people and things around them than happy people .Happy people were more likely to believe anything they were told,”said Forgas
For the study, Forgas and his team did a lot of experiments. During the experiments, they made the participants(參加者) feel happy or sad by watching films and thinking about good or bad things of the past.
In one of the experiments, happy and sad participants were asked to judge whether some wrong things were true or not. The results showed that people in a bad mood were less likely to believe that these things were true.

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, wear strange hairstyle and even fight. Basically (基本上) , they are often taking risks.
Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what’s the reason?
According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同齡人) view them—that is “peer influence”.
As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs.
In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior?
As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油門(mén)) but a weak brake (剎車(chē)). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. But the good news is that a violent (暴力的) teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”
小題1:What does the underlined word “irrational” in the 2nd paragraph mean?
A.Quick.B.Crazy.
C.Careful.D.Correct.
小題2: Why are teenagers often taking risksaccording to the text?
A.They like difficult tasks.
B.They don’t care about costs.
C.They are too young to tell right from wrong.
D.They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
小題3:How does Laurence explain the influence of peer influence on teens’ behavior?
A.By using a metaphor (比喻).
B.By giving examples.
C.By presenting research findings.
D.By performing an in-depth analysis (分析).
小題4:According to the text, with peers around them, teenagers tend to (傾向于) ______.
A.use more self-control
B.become more careful about what they do
C.perform better than when they are alone
D.focus more on short-term benefits(利益)
小題5:What can we learn from the text?
A.Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents.
B.Peer influence is bad on teenagers.
C.Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
D.Teenagers shouldn’t spend all the free time with their friends.
